This is technical laboratory work requiring specialization in fingerprint / palm print processing and examination. Work is performed independently under general direction.

Duties:

Examples of Work Performed
  • Collects known fingerprints / palm prints via ink and digital means.
  • Processes physical evidence for latent fingerprints / palm prints using a variety of light-based, physical and chemical methods.
  • Grades and sorts latent fingerprints / palm prints.
  • Evaluates, compares and identifies latent fingerprints / palm prints using established scientific methodology.
  • Utilizes the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and the Next Generation Identification (NGI) System for search of latent fingerprints / palm prints generated from criminal cases.
  • Maintains logs on processing / examination results and prepares technical reports based on findings.
  • Prepares latent fingerprint / palm print exhibits for court.
  • Testifies in courts of law at all levels of government as a qualified expert witness.

Requirements of Work
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, representatives of other agencies, and citizens.
  • Knowledge of and experience in using modern light-based, physical and chemical methods to develop latent fingerprints / palm prints.
  • Knowledge of photography and photographic theory.
  • Ability to manually operate cameras and other photographic equipment and accessories.
  • Ability to evaluate and compare known and unknown latent fingerprints / palm prints using established scientific methodology.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and the Next Generation Identification (NGI) System.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use computer hardware and software, including desktop and laptop computers and Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use Microsoft PhotoShop and other relevant software programs.
  • Ability to handle and manipulate firearms.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.
  • May require the ability to operate an automobile and acquire/maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
  • Visual acuity that meets established medical standards, including the ability to distinguish colors and the ability to use magnifiers and other related equipment.
  • Hearing ability that meets established medical standards.
  • Breathing ability that meets established medical and safety standards regarding the use of respirator masks and other similar apparatus.
  • Ability to lift and carry bulky items weighing up to thirty (30) pounds.
  • Ability to tolerate airborne nuisances associated with chemicals.
  • Must not be impaired from qualifying as an expert witness and testifying credibly in courts of law.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Requirements:

Required Experience and Training
  • Graduation from a four (4) year college with a degree in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science or a related field plus two (2) years of apprenticeship, internship or otherwise related latent print examination experience.
  • Latent Print certification through the International Association for Identification (IAI) is highly recommend or one must have been called to testify on latent prints.
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience and training may also be considered.
  • Candidates must be a United States citizen and pass an extensive criminal background check.
  • Offers of employment will be made contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, drug screening and polygraph examination.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
