On-Call position

The on-call Evidence Technician for the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office provides support to licensed peace officers. Duties include receiving and recording pertinent information for minor investigative reports from the public, which may include but are not limited to public complaints pertaining to enforcement of ordinances, witnesses to incidents or traffic incidents; receiving and processing applications for concealed weapons permits, assuring that information is correctly entered and complete; receiving, collecting, storing, retrieving, and controlling the condition and whereabouts of evidence used in connection with criminal proceedings, including personal effects of inmates.

May collect evidence from crime scenes. May establish a chain of command for access to evidence.

Duties:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Receives and processes applications for concealed weapons permits, assuring that information is correctly entered and complete. Submits documents to others for action.
  • Receives, collects, stores, retrieves, and controls the condition and whereabouts of evidence used in connection with criminal proceedings, including personal effects of inmates. May collect evidence from crime scenes. May establish a chain of command for access to evidence.
  • Receives and records pertinent information for minor investigative reports from the public. Reports may include but are not limited to public complaints pertaining to enforcement of ordinances, witnesses to incidents, or traffic incidents.
  • May perform duties normally assigned to the Law Enforcement Field Technician on an intermittent basis for purposes of cross training.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to accomplish the objectives of the position.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma;
  • AND
  • Three years of experience working in public service, either in a clerical or paraprofessional capacity. Associates Degree in criminal justice, psychology, or related area that would enable performance of the position may substitute for some experience.
Preference will be given for:
  • Prior experience working in a Property and Evidence capacity.
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal just related field.
Necessary Special Requirements
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.
