Evidence Technician

Duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Serves as manager of the evidence and lost and found property room.
• Accepts, records and maintains record system of all physical evidence and lost/found property taken into custody by the Police department.
• Disposes of evidence or property by return to owner, destruction or auction, upon case clearance, in accordance with state and local rules and regulations regarding property disposition.
• Prepares property and evidence for shipment and/or transport to crime laboratories and other destinations as needed
• Responsible for all evidence transport to and from the GBI lab, court, or crime scene.
• Assists in crime scene processing, including recording, photographing, latent print lifting, and collection of evidence. Maintains laboratory supplies.
• Performs routine laboratory analysis of various materials and testifies in court as required.
• Provides a variety of police related information to the public and governmental agencies.
• Receives incoming calls, determines nature and urgency of calls, and coordinates appropriate response.
• Receives requests from officers on call for special or specific information; follows up with appropriate information and relays the same back to the officer.
• Composes a variety of correspondence, reports and other materials requiring independent judgment as to content, accuracy, and completeness.
• Establishes and maintains records systems using moderately independent judgment.
• Maintains inventories and orders departmental supplies and materials.
• Conducts mandated inspections and inventories of all evidence and property in accordance with CALEA standards
• Trains officers on evidence collecting and processing procedures or instructs department personnel in best practices and proper methods of packaging all types of evidence property”
• Attends in-service training and technical or professional classes, seminars, or conferences to improve technical or professional skills
• Attends case or staff meetings to exchange information
• Initiates inquiries on property and evidence to obtain the information on ownership
• Other duties as assigned by CID supervisor and/or police chief
• Maintains on-call status as a crime scene technician

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

• Acts as a recording secretary for specific investigative meetings.
• Provides backup to records technicians as needed.

Requirements:

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent; and Three years of general office, communications, or records management experience, at least one of which is related to law enforcement,
OR
• An equivalent combination of education and experience.


• Must be 18 years or older at the time of employment.
• Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid State driver’s license without record of suspension or revocation in any State;
• No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories within the past seven years; and
• Must be able to read and write the English language.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment
• Working knowledge of laboratory techniques
• Working knowledge of finger printing techniques and classification systems
• Considerable knowledge of evidence and lost/found property maintenance and disposition practices.
• Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.
• Ability to communicates clearly and effectively.
• Establish and maintain working relationships with subordinates, peers, and supervisors.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Exhibits strong organizational abilities.
• Demonstrates the ability to multitask efficiently.
• Ability to maintain simple clerical records.
