Duties:

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
  • Receives various types of evidence and property such as sums of money, documents, drugs, and weapons confiscated by local law enforcement officials: checks for accuracy of items listed on property sheets; records and indexes evidence and property into a file management system; and bags and stores evidence and property.
  • Maintains the chain of custody for evidence collected by the department: signs for, transfers, and releases evidence and property using prescribed security measures; enters information into a computer system to complete custody transaction; ensures secure transport of evidence to and from crime and toxicology labs for testing or court as needed; and ensures all property and evidence are preserved and accounted for according to regulations.
  • Maintains documentation related to evidence/property received and released; and generates reports and updates files and records information in the database upon receipt or release.
  • Prepares and returns stored and found property to rightful owner: compares stolen property reports with recovered items; contacts owners and/or transports articles to regular/bulk storage; arranges for owners to identify and claim property; verifies ownership and authorization for property release; completes necessary paperwork to return property to individuals from whom it was confiscated, to owners from which it was stolen, or other appropriate personnel
  • Assists walk-in customers by answering questions and concerns; refers to appropriate department staff or provides information regarding other jurisdictions and surrounding agencies.
  • Assists with evidence/property items in court as necessary; and testifies in court as to chain of custody and procedures followed ensuring evidence was not tampered with
  • Responds to questions, complaints, and requests for information from citizens, court personnel, officers, other law enforcement agencies, insurance companies, attorneys, and other individuals
  • Processes various types of documents from the public, including impound forms, fingerprint forms, background packets, ride along applications, and subpoenas.
  • Maintains accountability of cash drawer and monies received from records releases, VIN inspections, fingerprints, DUI reimbursement fees, and various other monetary transactions.
  • Prepares, creates, and distributes routine reports as advised.

Requirements:

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by specialized courses/training or work experience that is equivalent to completion of one (1) year of college in Criminal Justice, Business Management, or closely related field; supplemented by two years experience in administrative/clerical data entry and customer service experience or closely related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

  • Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and prolonged standing, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (15-30 pounds).
  • Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
  • Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, water hazards.
