Forensic Scientist II - Latent Prints Analyst

Salary: $62,558 - $100,093 Annually

Purpose of Position: Serve as specialists in an area of expertise/scientific discipline and are responsible for identifying and analyzing physical evidence related to their specialization that is collected from criminal investigations. Forensic Scientists support the NM law enforcement community in the investigation of crimes by receiving and maintain physical evidence custody; preparing reports that document their findings; provide expert opinions in their scientific specialization to investigators; and provide expert witness testimony regarding their findings in a court of law.

Why does the job exist? Will be provided on the job training related to performing analysis of latent print evidence; with the intended goal of providing enough training and tenure to perform independently as a case-working latent fingerprint analyst. Upon successful completion of all training, and demonstrated and sustained competent performance, the incumbent will be responsible form independently collecting, classifying, identifying and analyzing latent fingerprint evidence related to criminal investigations.

Duties:

How does it get done?
  • Producing formal reports that accurately identify and analyze physical evidence to determine their significance to the investigation;
  • Presenting the results, conclusions and expert opinion in the scientific analysis of the latent print evidence;
  • Providing expert witness testimony regarding their findings in courts of law throughout the State of NM
  • Performing QA/QC to assure quality analysis, evidence integrity and maintain accreditation standards;
  • Continue training to develop competency and proficiency in their area of specialization, specifically latent print analysis for this position, as required.

Requirements:

Ideal Candidate
  • Write laboratory reports, retrieve, analyze and compare evidence and testify in a court of law
Minimum Qualification
  • For Latent Print and Firearm Forensic Scientists, a degree in any discipline will be accepted, or an Associates degree plus two (2) years of additional laboratory experience or four (4) years of additional laboratory experience can substitute for a Bachelor's Degree. Four (4) years of experience working in a forensics laboratory performing scientific analysis of forensic evidence, including one (1) year independent case work analysis.
Employment Requirements
  • Subject to national fingerprint based record checks within 30 days of assignment. Continued employment is contingent upon remaining felony free per section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy. This position is deemed as safety sensitive, pre-employment drug screening is required and random employment drug testing.
Working Conditions
  • State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated August 12, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
  • In addition, employees working in State correctional facilities who have the potential for direct or indirect exposure to inmates are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
  • Work is performed in a Forensic Laboratory setting; exposure to chemicals and biological fluids; statewide travel in car and/or small aircraft will be required when needed. Work under stressful situations with strict deadlines. Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs.; frequent walking, standing, sitting and bending; and exposure to noise from equipment and instruments utilized in the Laboratory is required.
