The Johnson County Sheriff's Office Criminalistics Laboratory is seeking a qualified applicant for a Forensic Scientist position in our Latent Print Section.

This position will be hired as a Forensic Scientist Trainee, Forensic Scientist, or Senior Forensic Scientist based upon prior experience. The 2022 salary ranges, minimum Forensic Scientist Trainee to maximum Senior Forensic Scientist, are $23.77 - $44.68 ($49,437.44 – $92,926.08 annualized).

Duties:

The major duties of this position include but are not limited to:
  • Examine developed latent prints utilizing the ACE-V process
  • Process evidence, utilizing various physical and chemical methods, to develop latent prints
  • Enter and search latent prints in AFIS and NGI
  • Participation in training, competency testing, and proficiency testing according to established protocols
  • Performing technical review and administrative review of casework data
  • Rigorously following all safety manuals, standard operating procedures, and quality assurance/quality control procedures
  • Performing quality assurance/quality control procedures of reagents, equipment, and instrumentation as necessary
  • Documenting and performing casework duties in accordance with laboratory procedures, with minimal errors and no pattern of deficiencies
  • Assisting in ensuring conformance to laboratory accreditation standards
  • Attending continuing education/training courses, workshops, seminars, conferences and professional meetings as time and resources allow
  • Participating in method validation/verification studies as needed
  • Providing expert testimony in courts of law as subpoenaed

Requirements:

Job Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in biology, bio-chemistry, chemistry, or forensic science related area. Transcripts must be submitted with the application in order to verify degree requirement. Experience may be substituted for degree requirement.
  • Experience requirements for Forensic Scientist: Two (2) years of experience in a forensic laboratory. Knowledge of the basic principles and applications of instrumentation used in latent print examinations. Successful completion of a Latent Print training program with demonstrated competency. Salary range: $27.24- $40.80 ($56,659 - $84,864 annualized)
  • Experience requirements for Senior Forensic Scientist: Five (5) years of independent forensic casework in the discipline of Latent Prints. Courtroom testimony experience. Successful completion of a Latent Print training program, with demonstrated competency. Salary range: $29.78 – $44.68 ($61,950.72 - $92,926.08 annualized).
  • Candidates not meeting the experience requirements for Forensic Scientist or Senior Forensic scientist will be hired as a Forensic Scientist Trainee. Salary range: $23.77 - $35.59 ($49,437.44 - $74,031.36 annualized).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Independent latent print casework experience
  • Latent Print Certification through the International Association for Identification (IAI)
