Evidence Technician

This position performs several job functions under the supervision of the Sergeant. This individual is responsible for receiving evidence items received at the Police Department and the proper disbursement of all evidence.

  • Oversees receiving, storing, and disposition of evidence and property items to be maintained by the Conroe Police Department.
  • Maintains paper, computer and media records on evidence chain of custody for case files.
  • Releases evidence and property to investigators, courts, other law enforcement agencies or other legally interested parties.
  • Provides court testimony as the custodian of records of evidence as required.
  • Prepares forms, packaging, and transports evidence to processing labs, donation sites, or destruction sites.
  • Oversees maintaining, ordering, and stocking evidence processing supplies as needed.
  • Acts as liaison to District Attorney's office regarding evidence matters.
  • Maintains cleanliness and safety of evidence, property, and receiving areas.
  • Trains and assists officers in the packaging and submission of evidence and property.
  • Collects video evidence from electronic videos capturing equipment at crime scenes or in relation to active investigative cases.
  • Reviews collected video evidence footage for pertinent events.
  • Records all inquires and requests for video evidence, as well as all changes made to original footage for the purpose of maintaining the integrity of evidence.
  • Ensures that property submitted by officer in lockers is property entered into the record management system (RMS) so that all items are property packaged, barcoded and labeled.
  • Processes property dispositions and updated property control section of computer database with released information.
  • Prepares and disseminates test results to detectives, courts, prosecutors
  • Collects and processes digital media evidence, maintaining records and tagging evidence.

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum 2 years of experience in Police related work, or civilian related field such as inventory control, computer warehouse operations and maintenance of records and receipt. Prior experience in working with audio, video, and digital media.
Special Requirements:
  • Possession of valid class "C" Texas driver's license required. Must polygraph when directed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of computer based inventory systems is required.
  • Knowledge of computerized inventory control software and other Microsoft software including word processing.
  • Knowledge of laws related to tracking, storage and production of evidence for court.
  • Knowledge of laws pertaining to processing and storing evidence is necessary.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent communication skills are required to contact internal officers and other related agencies.
  • Ability to properly record and distribute inventory.
  • Ability to use good oral and written communication skills to contact Police officers internally, the public, and other agencies to obtain important information related to the evidence for court.
  • Ability to operate all general office equipment
  • The work is light and requires the ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motions, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
