Kind of Work
  • To plan, direct, coordinate and manage the activities of the Crime Laboratory, which provides forensic science services to the NOPD and other criminal justice agencies; and to perform related work. The incumbent reports to an executive level, sworn officer, and has responsibilities for managing the staff and activities of the Crime Laboratory, which includes establishing policies, authorizing procedures and ensuring that laboratory resources are modernized and effectively utilized.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, or forensic science related area which must have included twelve (12) semester hours of college course work from a combination of undergraduate and graduate coursework in either biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, statistics, or population genetics. A minimum of three (3) of these credits must have been at the graduate level. OFFICIAL COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE PRESENTED TO THE NEW ORLEANS CIVIL SERVICE DEPARTMENT WITHIN TWO (2) WEEKS OF APPLICATION.
  • Eight (8) years of full-time professional experience in an accredited Forensic Laboratory or Crime Laboratory with at least two (2) years’ experience in a supervisory capacity. (Professional experience is defined as experience gained in a position that required a Bachelor's Degree upon entrance).
  • A PH.D in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a forensic related area may be substituted for three (3) years of the professional experience.
  • Crime Laboratory experience preferred.
