Position is responsible for preparing fingerprints for manual and computerized searches via Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). Position searches fingerprint records database and evaluates, compares, and verifies results.

Position Responsibilities
  • Processes fingerprints using Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) regarding subjects that have applied for city police employment (civilian and sworn), gun permits, gun releases, IPS applicants, taxicab licensure, adoption applicants, travel visas, etc.
  • Utilizes computer systems to conduct basic criminal history background checks.
  • Prepares and enters information (booking, arrest, name check information, etc.) into computer systems (e.g., Mugshot, AFIS, OMS, etc.).
  • Obtains and maintains IDACS/NCIC certification; utilizes appropriate system to perform name searches for above listed individuals to locate outstanding warrants and/or other public safety alerts.
  • Operates AFIS; types information into AFIS workstation; inputs fingerprints using livescan devices; add, delete and/or update files; prepares reports.
  • Assists authorized individuals with criminal records/warrant information; prepares requests for booking records; responds to inquiries for arrest/warrant information in person and by telephone; provides information in accordance with Department policy; routes calls to appropriate personnel.
  • Attends training sessions to maintain up-to-date knowledge of processing prisoners, booking records, AFIS, MUGSHOT, and other Identification related subjects. Attends initial and periodic friction ridge identification training from IMPD Latent Print Unit.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be able to type 25 wpm and pass pattern recognition and number sequence tests.
  • Prior fingerprint analysis/comparison and/or AFIS experience preferred.
  • Prefer two (2) years prior work experience, previous law enforcement experience, and previous fingerprinting or criminal records maintenance experience or equivalent education.
  • Requires knowledge of law enforcement information systems (IDACS/NCIC, CMS, VIN, AFIS, Mugshot); IMPD regulations, policies and procedures; related criminal and civil law; arrest procedures; court policies and procedures relating to criminal arrest procedures; fingerprint classification.
  • Must be able to identify files both alphabetically and numerically; handle sensitive and hostile public contacts; learn and utilize various fingerprint and records management software.
  • Must be able to complete detailed forms, records and reports; ability to distinguish visual detail; emotional stability; effective communication skills; must be able to obtain and maintain IDACS/NCIC certification; must be able to learn and pass internal fingerprint training program and pass proficiency testing as deemed necessary.
  • Must pass pre-employment background investigation, drug screen and polygraph;
  • Position is subject to random drug screenings.
Independent Judgment
  • Actions are controlled by established policies and procedures. Supervisor generally available. However, independent action is needed to identify problems and take appropriate action. High degree of confidentiality required. May have to deal with hostile individuals. Errors could have a significant negative impact on the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and/or court proceedings.
