Under general supervision, performs highly specialized technical work in the examination, identification, preservation, and analysis of digital evidence related to law enforcement investigations.

Examples of Duties
  • Conducts forensic examinations of digital devices, computer systems, storage media, and electronic storage devices to obtain evidence contained within;
  • Determines methods and techniques appropriate for extracting data from a variety of digital evidence items;
  • Restores recoverable deleted data and accesses password-protected and secured files;
  • Preserves and copies original media;
  • Prevents the transference of viruses, destructive programs, and inadvertent writes to and from the original media;
  • Exposed to crime scenes and participates in investigations;
  • Disassembles and images various electronic storage devices;
  • Identifies evidence of computer crimes such as the theft and sabotage of data and unlawful access of data and systems;
  • Prepare reports documenting examination procedures and results;
  • Research and prepare procedure manuals related to assignment;
  • Provide training to other staff in areas of seizure and collection of evidence from computers or other electronic devices;
  • Maintains specialized equipment;
  • Forms and articulates expert opinions based on analysis, provides expert testimony in depositions, trials, and other proceedings; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • College level coursework from an accredited college or university in Computer Information Systems or a closely related field. A Bachelor's degree with major coursework in Computer Information Systems or a closely related field is desirable. For coursework or degrees obtained outside of the U.S., an official equivalency evaluation is required.
  • Three years of experience in digital forensics, computer system analysis and/or operation, and maintenance and repair of computer systems.
  • Experience working in a law enforcement agency is desirable.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Possession and maintenance of an appropriate, valid California driver's license.
  • Possession of a certification in digital forensics is desirable.
Special Requirements: Essential functions and duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:
  • Ability to work in a standard office environment and outside; ability to travel to different sites and locations;
  • Regularly required to talk or hear. Regularly required to sit, stand walk, reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, and stoop.
  • Required to grasp, use repetitive hand movement and fine coordination.
  • Requires near, far, and color vision in viewing crime scenes and evidence.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds;
  • May be required to work irregular hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
