Evidence Technician

Salary: Starting Salary Range: $22.19 to $24.46 per hour, D.O.Q

The Evidence Technician will perform evidence collection and processing duties in support of the operations and services of the Lawrence, KS Police Department, specifically in support of the evidence custodial functions.

Duties:

Some of the position's important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Receive items collected as evidence, found property, and personal property
  • Perform quality control inspections of item packaging and custody sheets to insure the integrity of the chain of custody
  • Conduct varied clerical duties to include filing, word processing, data entry, and copying
  • Compose, compile, prepare, review and present various reports and documents of findings and results; maintain related records and files
  • Utilize various evidence gathering, packaging, development, and cataloging techniques
  • Operate a variety of office equipment including copiers, facsimile machines, and computers
  • Respond to internal and external inquiries in a courteous and professional manner; provide information within the area of assignment
  • Use various resources and the court system to determine if property can be returned to its rightful owner, destroyed, or sold at auction. Facilitate the return transaction to the owner, destruction order or auction

Requirements:

Qualifications
  • Equivalent to a Bachelors degree in natural sciences, finance, library science, criminal justice, or a related field. Significant previous experience in a law enforcement setting working with evidence may substitute for the degree requirement.
  • One (1) year of experience in a law enforcement or related agency working with evidence preferred.
  • Five (5) years of experience in crime scene investigation in a law enforcement agency working with evidence, if assigned to support the evidence custodial functions.
  • Standard office computer software proficiency required.
  • The successful candidate must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid driver's license and pass City background, physical, and drug screens.
