The Division of Forensic Science within the GBI is currently looking to fill a position(s) and create an applicant pool for future positions of Crime Lab Scientists (Toxicologists).

The Division of Forensic Sciences (DOFS) Toxicology Section provides state and local law enforcement officials and medical examiners with vital information about human biological samples and specifically whether drugs, alcohol or poisons may have played a role in the commission of a crime or a death. By analyzing blood, urine, stomach contents and tissues, DOFS toxicologists are able to establish whether traces of alcohol, drugs or poisons are present, and if so, in what quantity.

Duties:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Under immediate supervision train to perform analytical procedures related to blood, urine, stomach contents and tissues to establish whether traces of alcohol, drugs or poisons are present, and if so, in what quantity for the GBI Crime Lab.

Requirements:

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry from an accredited college or university.
  • OR
  • A Forensic Science degree, which included the successful completion of at least 40 semester (or 60 quarter) hours of CHEMISTRY coursework.
  • NOTES: Successful completion is considered a "C" or better in coursework.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to applicants that, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:
  • Current DOFS employee
  • Successful completion of at least 40 semester (or 60 quarter) hours of chemistry coursework.
  • Previous experience in a forensic laboratory or experience with toxicology procedures.
  • Forensic Science degree accredited by the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC).
