Forensic Chemist

Salary: Hiring Range: $58,420 - $89,090 per year

The Forensic Chemist is responsible for the chemical analysis of suspected controlled substances within an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory for the Wake County CCBI department.

Duties:

Essential Functions:
  • Establish and update technical procedures, perform regular calibrations on equipment and instrumentation, and schedule and document preventative maintenance on equipment and instrumentation
  • Utilize specialized laboratory equipment and instrumentation to include- Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer/Gas Chromatograph, Infrared Spectrometer, Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer/Mass Spectrometer, and Time of Flight Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer
  • Serve as an integral subject matter expert for the prosecution of those involved in the violation of NC and federal controlled substance regulations
  • Testify as an expert witness in court
  • Complete annual proficiency tests and obtain and maintain a Diplomate status certification/membership through the American Board of Criminalistics within two years of the date of eligibility for certification
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen and is subject to random continuing drug screenings as a condition of continued employment

Requirements:

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)
  • Bachelor's degree in Physical, Natural or Forensic Science or related field
  • Four years of experience in sample analysis
  • American Board of Criminalistics Certification required within two years of eligibility or employment - Must maintain current certification thereafter
  • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemistry, Toxicology, Natural/Biological/Physical Sciences, Forensics, or related field
  • Two years of experience as a Forensic Chemist in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory and/or a Fellow Certification through the American Board of Criminalistics
How Will We Know You're 'The One'?
  • Familiarity with the NC Controlled Substances Act and Title 18 of the United States Code regarding the illegal use and possession of controlled substances
  • Familiarity with standards and requirements of IS0 17025 accreditation standards
  • Knowledge of appropriate procedures for using, and ability to use, equipment/instruments to meet defined quality and quantity standards
  • Ability to observe, monitor, collect, and record data
  • Ability to assess the accuracy, validity, and integrity of the data
  • Ability to interpret and evaluate results and create reports
  • Ability to manage resources, monitor activities, and assess environmental risks and quality control associated with the program
  • Ability to review and study relevant information from various sources to identify new substances and scientifically validate results
  • Ability to maintain social, ethical and organizational norms
  • Ability to firmly adhere to codes of conduct and ethical principles
  • Ability to work effectively with others, outside the line of formal authority
