Under general supervision performs work of moderate difficulty in performing examinations and/or analyses of physical evidence in the Police Crime Laboratory; performs related work as required.

Duties:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Examines and evaluates physical evidence for the drug and gun disciplines.
  • Assesses importance of incoming cases to determine priorities for analyses and interprets results of test findings.
  • Identifies the content and weight of pharmaceutical products and illicit drugs by using infrared spectrophotometry, gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, color tests, and/ or crystal tests.
  • Examines, analyzes, identifies and compares fired bullets, cartridge cases, determines if firearm is operational.
  • Serial number restoration.
  • Entry of evidence casings or test fires on NIBIN system and compares digital images of casings and coordinates with ATF and NIGIC. Testifies in court as an expert witness.
  • Communicates with court, daily, about upcoming cases.
  • Explains value and nature of evidence to Police Officers and Prosecutors.
  • Writes technical reports and maintains files of case notes.
  • Maintains chain of custody of evidence.
  • Maintains inventories of laboratory items.
  • Prepares standardized laboratory reagents.

Requirements:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Have the ability to learn or knowledge of the following: Physical and biological sciences, general laboratory equipment, instruments, qualitative and quantitative analyses, laboratory supplies and materials, NIBIN system, specific approaches and techniques required in the forensic sciences and formal rules of evidence.
  • Must be familiar with the following skills: Maintaining detailed records and preparing reports, identification of a variety of evidence, ANAB/ISO accreditation, oral communication or public speaking and the criminal justice system.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Forensics or Criminalistics which included coursework in general chemistry, organic chemistry, instrumental analysis, quantitative analysis and physics or an equivalent degree with similar coursework.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Internship in a forensic laboratory preferred.
