Senior Forensic Specialist

Salary: $5,724.65 to $8,109.55 per month

Under general supervision, leads and participates in collecting and documenting evidence at crime scenes and processing and preserving critical evidence for use in possible criminal prosecution.

Duties:

The below list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY; incumbents in this class may not be required to perform all duties listed or may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
  • Collects and documents evidence at crime scenes and processes and preserve evidence for use in a possible criminal prosecution;
  • Maintains the chain of custody for evidence collected at crime scenes;
  • Collects fingerprints, take photographs, and makes video records of possible evidence at crime scenes;
  • Gathers and preserves biological samples and conducts splatter analysis at crime scenes;
  • Prepares reports of evidence collected and records crime scene observations and details;
  • Oversees assigned staff in the analysis of crime scene evidence;
  • Inputs fingerprint information into the state identification system.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associates Degree AND two years of crime scene investigation and crime scene analysis experience
  • Must possess at the time of application and maintain a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Work hours will include various shifts, including weekends, nights, and must be available for call-outs to crime scenes after-hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Incumbents must be able to walk, lift, carry, push and pull 25lbs; climb stairs and ladders; stoop, twist, squat/kneel, crawl, run, grasp, repeatedly bend and move wrists, use both hands, legs, and feet.

  • Knowledgeable of crime scene analysis and evidence chain of custody procedures, fingerprinting, biological sample collection techniques, and splatter analysis procedures
  • Skilled in collecting, documenting, and processing evidence at crime scenes for possible use in criminal prosecution, analyzing, preserving, storing, and safely securing forensic evidence and property, providing and following complicated verbal and written instructions, establishing and maintaining effective and productive working relationships, preparing professional documentation and presentations for official use in criminal proceedings.
  • Ability to analyze and compare latent prints train, provide technical guidance, express ideas and information clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing, and evaluate technical information and statutes to arrive at sound recommendations based on the data and effectively respond in a crisis. Must be able to work with little direct supervision and exercise good judgment to prioritize and manage workload and other duties.
  • Proficient in operating office equipment, including computers and software, fax machines, copiers, scanners, specialized equipment, and other industry-related software.
