Deputy Coroner I - Autopsy Technician

Assists the medical examiner in performing forensic autopsies.
  • Prepares decedent and autopsy suite for autopsies by weighing, measuring, and photographing the decedent, and setting up tools, supplies and evidence gathering equipment.
  • Assists the medical examiner in performing the autopsy and becomes the custodian of all evidence collected during the autopsy.
  • Assists the investigator with pertinent autopsy paperwork.
  • Categorizes autopsy photo slides.
  • Cleans the autopsy suite, including laundering of autopsy gowns and proper disposal of contaminated/biohazard waste.
  • Prepares the decedent for release to the funeral home, including documentation and release of the decedent's personal property and evidence to law enforcement officials. Prepares and provides professional testimony in court, relation to certain cases.
  • Cleans and stocks the autopsy suite.
  • Serves as member of disaster team when designated by Coroner.
  • May greet the public, answer telephone calls and perform clerical tasks.
  • Performs other duties as required.


  • High school diploma with anatomy/physiology coursework preferred.
  • Work experience relating to the position.
  • Ability to maintain professional composure when communicating with the Coroner's staff, hospital staff, law enforcement agencies, funeral homes, families of decedents, and the general public.
  • Ability to work with deceased persons.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work independently.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, physical examination and drug screen.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver's License.
Work Conditions
  • Work is performed in an office setting and in the morgue/laboratory. May be exposed daily to chemical and biological hazards. Work may be performed under constant emotional stress from dealing with decedents. Must be able to work changing and rotating schedules, including various days, shifts, weekends and holidays. May be required to be on-call and respond to emergency situations. Constantly utilizes eye, hand, and finger coordination to perform job tasks. Normal color vision is required, due to need to examine and classify evidentiary materials and to process and interpret photographic and electronic images. Must be able to traverse rough, unimproved terrain on foot, in extreme weather and frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, balance, negotiate stairs, climb and crouch to perform job duties, often while simultaneously lifting. Must be able to safely lift, push, pull and carry 100 pounds, including deceased bodies in tight quarters; assists medical examiner in eviscerating decedents. Coroner’s Office employees are responsible for providing proof of vaccinations and/or tuberculosis testing as applicable to the specific position and must provide proof of completion of required vaccinations/testing or proof of initiation prior to date of hire. This is a part-time position regularly working up to 25 hours per week.
