Forensic Toxicologist

Duties:

Under direction,
  • Performs toxicological analysis of tissues and body fluids to be used for the detection of drugs and other substances relevant to establishing the cause of death.
  • Reviews case histories, autopsy findings, and results of toxicological analysis, and provides an interpretation as to the involvement of drugs and/or poisons in the death under investigation.
  • Compiles information and prepares technical reports for review and use by the Chief Forensic Pathologist, law enforcement agencies, attorneys, courts and others regarding findings in drug and poison deaths.
  • Testifies in court as an expert or fact witness and prepares analytical reports of laboratory findings regarding presence and effects of toxic substances.
  • May be responsible for the Toxicology Laboratory.
  • Utilizes current County-wide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in toxicology, pharmacology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, biology, forensic science or closely related field of study;
  • AND
  • Have had two (2) years of full-time analytical experience in forensic toxicology;
  • OR
  • Possess a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in toxicology, pharmacology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, biology, forensic science or a closely related field of study;
  • AND
  • Have had at least one (1) year of full-time analytical experience in forensic toxicology, testing toxic agents;
  • OR
  • Possess a Ph.D. from an accredited college or university in toxicology, pharmacology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, biology, forensic science or a closely related field of study.

  • Pass the total examination, including the employment physical, established for this classification.
  • Successfully complete the six months probationary period.
