Evidence Technician

Salary: $17.35 Hourly

Manages the day to day activities of the Evidence Processing Unit in accordance with department policies and procedures. Performs a variety of complex forensic and technical work including analyzing and identifying evidence obtained from a crime scene. Uses photography equipment to process crime scenes and evidence.

Duties:

Essential Duties
  • Identifies and analyzes evidence obtained from a crime scene; reports conclusions.
  • Presents expert testimony in courts.
  • Plans and implements programs essential to the ongoing operational efficiency of the Unit.
  • Attends conferences/meetings and maintains membership in professional organizations to keep abreast of advances and trends in the forensics field.
  • Provides instruction to police staff relating to forensic identification.
  • Uses photography equipment to process crime scenes and evidence.
  • Enters fingerprint data into Department fingerprint database for comparison and analysis.
  • Documents and oversees destruction or release of evidentiary items.
  • Coordinates with other Law Enforcement agencies in evidentiary matters.
  • Operates a personal computer and associated equipment and procedures to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Disposes of all evidence at the completion of legal proceedings.
  • Secures and transports evidence utilizing city vehicle.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Two-year college degree in Criminal Justice or a closely related field;
  • OR
  • Two years' experience in evidence collection and preservation, or warehouse management;
  • OR
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office and Windows Operating systems;
  • Knowledge of collecting, receiving, examining and the proper storage of evidence;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance;
  • Must demonstrate some skill in the operations of equipment listed below;
  • Ability to lean the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors and government officials;
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
Supplemental Information
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation and complete a polygraph examination.
  • Must have a valid driver's license by date of hire.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Texas Driver's License within 60 days of hire.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
  • Office machines, computers, police radios, forensic laboratory tools and instruments, 35mm and digital cameras, and motor vehicles.
