Evidence Technician

McLennan County Sheriff, Waco, Texas

Salary: 1,313.43 - $1,759.57 Bi-weekly

The Evidence Technician performs a variety of tasks associated with the receiving, tracking, handling, processing, storage, safekeeping and proper disposal of all evidence and property. Assists deputies with the packaging, documentation and preservation of property/evidence as needed to include photographic documentation of the crime scene and various other scene preservation processing.

Duties:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Receives, sorts and secures all property and evidence delivered to the evidence room; responsible for verifying evidence reports against property reports to ensure accuracy
  • Preserves, examines and secures evidence; documents all handling of evidence and property; maintains activity logs and generates reports as needed
  • Testifies in court regarding the findings and processing methods used at the crime scene
  • Assists deputies with the packaging, documentation and preservation of property/evidence as needed to include photographic documentation of the crime scene and various other scene preservation processing
  • Responds to crime scenes as needed for evidence collection assistance
  • Documents scenes and/or evidence through photography, diagrams, logs, etc.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests from department personnel, criminal justice agencies, County/District Attorneys, Prosecutors, and the public in regards to property and evidence
  • Releases items to authorized parties within scope of authority and documents return of evidence to custody
  • Uses teletype and/or computer terminal to access driver licenses, criminal records, various agencies files, NCIC/TCIC and vehicle registration databases to identify subjects for DPS and other law enforcement agencies as requested.
  • Tracks statute of limitations and legal time frames and assures compliance to regulations
  • Maintains the integrity, professionalism, values and goals of the Department by assuring that all rules and regulation are followed, and that accountability and public trust is maintained
  • Verifies stolen property, weapons through the use of national and state crime information computer systems; searches pawn shop entries/systems as needed
  • Maintains a working knowledge of current and past Texas Code of Criminal Procedure and Penal Code as it pertains to evidence retention and storage
  • Conducts research on property/evidence for destruction, sale and/or conversion to department use, and disposes of items in accordance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations
  • Coordinates, prepares and approves all items designated for auction, reconciles the auction report, ensures timely deposit of funds
  • Conducts inventories/audits in accordance with Sheriff Office Department Policies and Procedures
  • Transports property and evidence to courts , crime labs, and from crime scenes
  • Maintains adequate inventory of evidence-related supplies
  • Attends training and seminars in order to continue education
  • Performs other minor administrative and tasks as assigned
  • Regular attendance and timeliness are required

Requirements:

Required:
  • High School Diploma or GED
SKILLS ~ EXPERIENCE Required:
  • Current and valid TX driver’s license and a safe driving record
  • Must be twenty-one years of age on /or before date of hire
  • Must maintain personal loyalty to the Sheriff
  • General skill in operating standard office equipment such as personal computers, calculators, and telephones
  • Maintains good interpersonal relations (the manner in which the employee responds emotionally and verbally) with the public, other employees, and supervisors
  • General knowledge of basic hardware and software and uses of a variety of different computer operating systems such as Microsoft Office Work, Excel, Outlook
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • General knowledge of legal and criminal justice systems
  • Must have the ability to retain detailed information, as well as take notes on how procedures are done
  • Keen attention to detail; careful and accurate data entry
  • Must be able to work well within a team environment and high stress situations
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive criminal history and background check
  • Must be able to maintain regular attendance and timeliness
Preferred:
  • TCIC/TLETS Certification is required, or the ability to obtain within 6 months from the date of hire.
  • 2 years’ work experience in a law enforcement capacity
  • 1 year experience in inventory and/or records management
  • 1 year crime scene technician or evidence technician experience
  • Working knowledge of Federal/State laws regarding physical, digital, and biological evidence
  • Property/Evidence certification, or the ability to obtain within 1 year from the date of hire

PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear
  • The employee frequently is required to stand.
  • The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; use hands to find, handle, or feel objects, reach with hands and arms; stoop and kneel
  • Must be able to safely lift 30 lbs.
HOURS / SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
  • Works regular hours with some overtime, but is subject to be called in if an emergency should arise (24 hours)
