DNA Technical Leader

The DNA technical leader reports to the Executive Director and shall be responsible for the technical operations of the DNA Section. The DNA Technical Leader works closely with the laboratory Quality Assurance Manager to ensure adherence of the DNA section to FBI DNA Quality Assurance Standards and to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Accreditation Standards.

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Technical problem solving of analytical methods and oversight of training, quality assurance, safety, and proficiency testing pertaining to the DNA section.
  • Conducting and reviewing Forensic Biology and DNA casework.
  • Evaluating all methods and validations used by the DNA section.
  • Proposing new or modified analytical procedures to be used by examiners


Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Master’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a forensic science related area.
  • A minimum of 12 credit hours (graduate and undergraduate) covering the subject areas of Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Statistics and/or Population Genetics. Three or more of the 12 semester or equivalent credit hours shall include at least one graduate-level course.
  • A minimum of three years of experience as a qualified DNA casework analyst in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
  • Successful completion of an FBI sponsored QAS auditor training course or completion of the course within one year of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Master’s or Doctorate degree in Biology, Chemistry with peer reviewed publication(s) of original research.
  • Five years of experience as a qualified forensic biology/DNA casework analyst.
  • Two years of experience as a qualified DNA Technical Leader in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
  • Experience with the BEAST LIM system.
Knowledge of:
  • ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Accreditation Standards and 2020 FBI DNA Quality Assurance Standards
  • Principles of quality assurance and quality management.
  • Root Cause(s) Analysis and Corrective Actions
  • Laboratory health and safety procedures.
  • Recent developments, current literature and sources of information in the field of forensic biology and DNA analysis.
Skill(s) in:
  • Organization of duties and assignments.
  • Responsive reporting to management
  • Excellent communication skills, orally, written and involving groups
  • Effectively completing assignments with little or no oversight
  • Recommending and implementing effective process improvements
Ability to:
  • Present evidence clearly and accurately and when necessary, in lay terms
  • Provide training and assist in evaluating the work of others.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports of findings.
