Forensic Biologist (Crime Lab Scientist)

The Division of Forensic Science within the GBI is currently looking to fill positions and create an applicant pool for state & grant-funded vacancies of Crime Lab Scientists in the Forensic Biology Department. The grant-funded positions will be funded by a federal grant with an anticipated start date of October 16, 2021. Funding for the grant-funded positions is expected to last approximately 24 months from the start of employment. Continuation of the positions beyond the 24 months is contingent upon availability of additional grant or other funding. These positions will be housed at either of the following GBI Laboratories:

  • GBI Headquarters Laboratory located in Decatur, GA.
  • GBI Coastal Laboratory located in Pooler, GA.
  • GBI Southwestern Laboratory located in Moultrie, GA.

  • Under immediate supervision perform analytical procedures related to DNA analysis of biological samples for the GBI Crime Lab. Performs DNA analysis of physiological fluids for the purpose of identification and individualization. The type of material typically examined includes but is not limited to semen and saliva collected at crime scenes or from articles of physical evidence.


  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a Major in BIOLOGY or CHEMISTRY that included the successful completion of at least 40 semester hours (or 60 quarter hours) of related major course work.
  • Major course work must include the successful completion of at least twelve (12) cumulative semester hours (or equivalent quarter hours) in the following required subject areas: Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology and Statistics (or Population Genetics).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Preference will be given to applicants that, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:
  • Current DOFS Employee
  • Previous experience performing human STR analysis in an accredited forensic laboratory
  • Previous experience operating a Model 3500 genetic analyzer
  • Previous experience using GeneMapper ID software
  • Previous experience using extraction techniques for human DNA
