Autopsy Technician

Salary: Hiring Salary Range: $16.83 - $20.24 per hour

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, this position provides primary assistance to staff pathologists with autopsy procedures and related activities. Specific duties include transporting the deceased between morgue and autopsy room; lifting and transferring of body between cart and table; preparing body for autopsy; assisting the pathologist with evisceration; ensuring specimens are handled and stored appropriately and preparing the deceased’s body for the funeral home.

Duties:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists with autopsy duties, as appropriate and expected.
  • Maintains and operates various instruments and equipment.
  • Collects forensic evidence and maintains chain of custody, as required.
  • Enters evidence information into computer, as necessary.
  • Prepares bodies for postmortem examinations.
  • Washes, dries, measures, and positions bodies.
  • Prepares and preserves tissues and specimens.
  • Assists in body dissection.
  • Serves as a source of information and support during autopsy procedures.
  • Cleans and disinfects autopsy suite, equipment, tables, and instruments after each procedure.
  • Maintains quality control documentation relative to autopsy and morgue procedures.
  • Prepares specimen for processing based on established guidelines. Label requisitions and specimen containers accurately.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

EDUCATION:
  • High School or GED: three (3) years’ experience in allied health care and/or performing autopsies OR Certificate-level training or an associate degree or graduate of a Surgical Technology Program; one (1) year experience in allied health care and/or performing autopsies OR bachelor's degree in biology, forensic science, or related field with a focus in forensic science or medicine may be substituted for certification and experience Previous experience in a medical examiner or coroner's office preferred. Exposure to human remains, forensic instruments, pathogens, chemical or biological hazards, blood, and other body fluids is required. Knowledge of anatomy is required. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Basic computer skills to include Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to use a camera with basic photography skills.
  • Ability to perform all duties in a manner respectful of the patient and family.
  • Ability to maintain specimen storage areas.
  • Ability to practice the proficient and safe use of equipment necessary for the completion of job duties.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and safe work environment in Autopsy room to ensure efficient workflow and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to foster department teamwork through effective communication.
  • Ability to participate in Safety and Infection Control activities.
  • Ability to maintain supply stock in autopsy areas.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Must pass a criminal background check, drug screen, and possess a valid driver's license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS, WORK ENVIRONMENT, & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to do the following:
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, lift, carry, push, pull, bending, sit, climb, and stoop.
  • Ability to lift and/or maneuver bodies and equipment.
  • Ability to properly handle and dispose of hazardous materials.
  • Ability to wear provided personal protective equipment is provided due to exposure to biohazardous and/or chemically hazardous materials.
WORK SCHEDULE:
  • This position may be occasionally required to work frequent evenings and occasional weekends. May require occasional overnight travel.
