Latent Print Examiner

Salary: $39,316.88 - $45,214.41 Annually

This position typically evaluates latent print evidence for overall quality to establish identity and enter unknown latent fingerprints into the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) for automated search and identification. Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and the public using principles of good customer service.

Duties:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Perform fingerprint comparisons (forward and reverse) using ACE-V methodology to establish the identity of latent ridge detail and prepare written reports documenting the examinations performed and the conclusions reached.
  • Continuously acquire knowledge in the science of fingerprint development and comparison for jury comprehension in order to testify in court and keep a level of competency.
  • General knowledge of friction ridge skin patterns and characteristic interpretations.
  • General knowledge of techniques to locate, develop, identify, and compare latent prints.
  • General knowledge of the AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) computer system.
  • General knowledge of evidence and criminal procedures.
  • Perform assigned tasks according to prescribed procedures and in a timely manner.
  • Effectively present and defend court testimony.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to look back and forth to compare minute detail between two or more sources of information.
  • Establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Minimum Requirements to Perform Work
  • Must be 21 years of age or older;
  • High School diploma or equivalent; Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a field related to the job preferred;
  • Experience may be substituted for education with a minimum of two (2) year of latent print examinations or analysis work experience; LE-1 Certification preferred;
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license for South Carolina with safe driving record; must pass all required tests and must be able to operate standard issue vehicles;
Special Requirements:
  • Departmental testing will be administered during interview;
  • Initial testing consists of extensive background check, Nelson Denny and then a polygraph test;
  • Post offer drug testing, psychological exam, pre-placement physical and a functional evaluation capacity test will be required;
  • This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing;
  • This position is considered emergency essential and will be required to report to work during any declared emergency situation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of using personal computers.
  • Knowledge of general office equipment.
  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State laws and County ordinances.
  • Knowledge of police property and evidence receipt, storage, transport and release procedures.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to distinguish fine visual details.
  • Ability to read and comprehend memoranda, technical reports, and scientific literature.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to act quickly and efficiently in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to render accurate oral or written reports of incidents and violations of the law.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of direct supervision.
Physical Demands
  • This position requires the employee to sit and stand; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, finger, grasp objects such as weapons, handcuffs, etc.; reach, pull and push with hands and arms; balance, climb, crawl, crouch, kneel and bend; use mental acuity and repetitive motion; and walk, talk and hear. The employee must lift and carry up to seventy-five (75) pounds and move one hundred fifty (150) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Conditions
  • The work is regularly performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities and needs. Normal work hours are Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm with the ability to work after hours when necessary. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
