Criminalist I - Seized Drugs

Salary: $22.83 - $38.08/hour

This position is housed in the TPD Seized Drugs Unit, which supports the Tucson Police Department and the Counter Narcotics Alliance (CNA), a multi-agency collaborative task force composed of officers and special agents from local, state, and federal agencies. The work performed by the Criminalist I provides scientific evidence to TPD and the CNA, and produces reports, presents findings, conclusions, and evidence to courts of law.

This position is funded, as needed, by a recurring federal grant that is renewed annually contingent upon availability of government funding. In accordance with Civil Service Rules, Section 5 - Employment in Grant Funded Positions, any person employed by the City, who on initial entry into City employment under any type of appointment in a position specifically designated as funded in whole or in part through a grant from a public or private source, shall be informed in writing by the Director at the time of appointment, and the person shall acknowledge in writing, that the provisions have been read and understood that employment will cease at the termination of the grant regardless of the status of the employee and without regard to length of service. Persons so terminated are not entitled to any right of appeal. 27 CITY OF TUCSON CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION RULES AND REGULATIONS REVISED 10-31-14 RULE VI A grant funded employee may, subject to other provisions provided for by these rules, be transferred, promoted or demoted into a non-grant funded position and become subject to the provisions of the Civil Service Rules and Regulations governing other city employment. Permanent classified employees who have previously completed a probationary period in a non-grant funded position and are serving in a grant funded position are exempt from the requirements of this section. Employees paid through an annually recurring funding source as defined in Rule I, Section 3, are covered by the layoff provisions found in Rule VIII, Section 2.

Essential Functions
  • Performs scientific analysis of physical evidence by using chemical, instrumental and comparative techniques meeting the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) requirements, responding to crime scenes, documenting findings through extensive note taking and photographic methods, writing technical reports and providing expert testimony.
  • Processes evidence by logging the evidence into a computerized tracking system, and analyzing, repackaging and returning evidence to storage in a manner that maintains the integrity of the evidence and the safety of the individual with regards to blood borne pathogens and other toxins.
  • Oversees general instrument maintenance by performing troubleshooting of laboratory instruments, conducting periodic quality assurance and quality control checks including running standards and performing general maintenance in accordance with the ANSI National Accreditations Board (ANAB) requirements.
  • Provides expert testimony by discussing laboratory results with officers and attorneys, attending pre-trial conferences and testifying in court.
  • Remains current in scientific advancements in the forensic field by reading technical publications, making presentations, attending training seminars and providing general scientific information to personnel and agencies.

Special Job Requirements - The ideal candidate will possess the above minimum qualifications as well as relevant experience in the areas listed below:
  • Bachelor’s degree must be in a chemical, physical, or biological science or forensic science field
  • Must obtain Arizona Criminal Justice Information System Network Terminal Operator Certification within one year of hire
  • Successful completion of competency in testing modules and proficiency tests at the conclusion of the training program within one year of hire
