Forensic Scientist - Crime Scene Investigation

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Criminalistics Laboratory is seeking qualified applicants to fill one Forensic Scientist position (non-sworn) in our Crime Scene Investigation Section.

This position will be hired as a Forensic Scientist Trainee, Forensic Scientist, or Senior Forensic Scientist based upon prior experience. The 2021 salary ranges, minimum Forensic Scientist Trainee to maximum Senior Forensic Scientist, are $23.30 - $43.80 ($48,472 – $91,104 annualized). Duties:

The major duties of this position include but are not limited to:
  • Processing simple to highly complex crime scenes for evidence collection, processing, preservation, and packaging using various forms of photography, 3D laser scanning, chemical testing, visual inspection, and various manual techniques.
  • Responding to crime scenes during non-working hours including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Responding to crime scenes which may include difficult subject matter and uncomfortable working conditions.
  • Presenting information regarding crime scene processing and evidence collection techniques to law enforcement and/or citizens.
  • Performs maintenance, and complex troubleshooting of equipment, and software to ensure the integrity of testing.
  • Participation in training, competency testing, and proficiency testing according to established protocols.
  • Performing technical and administrative review of casework data.
  • Rigorously following all safety manuals, standard operating procedures, and quality assurance/quality control procedures.
  • Performing quality assurance/quality control procedures of equipment and instrumentation as necessary.
  • Documenting and performing casework duties in accordance with laboratory procedures, with minimal errors and no pattern of deficiencies.
  • Assisting in ensuring conformance to laboratory accreditation standards.
  • Attending continuing education/training courses, workshops, seminars, conferences and professional meetings as time and resources allow.
  • Participating in method validation/verification studies as needed.
  • Providing expert testimony in courts of law as subpoenaed.

Requirements:

Educational requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a natural science, forensic science with laboratory coursework, or other relevant field.
  • An acceptable driving record is required.
  • This position requires successful completion of an extensive background check, which includes a polygraph and a drug screen.
Experience requirements for Forensic Scientist:
  • Two (2) years of experience in a forensic laboratory performing analyses in crime scene investigations.
  • Knowledge of the basic principles and applications of techniques in crime scene investigations. Successful completion of a Crime Scene Investigation training program with demonstrated competency.
  • Salary range: $26.70 - 40.00 ($55,544 - $83,191 annualized).
Experience requirements for Senior Forensic Scientist:
  • Five (5) years of independent forensic casework in the discipline of Crime Scene Investigation. Courtroom testimony experience.
  • Successful completion of a Crime Scene Investigation training program, with demonstrated competency.
  • Salary range: $29.20 – 43.80 ($60,736 - $91,104 annualized).
Forensic Scientist Trainee
  • A selected candidate not meeting the experience requirements for Forensic Scientist or Senior Forensic scientist will be hired as a Forensic Scientist Trainee.
  • Salary range: $23.30 - 34.90 ($48,472 - 72,583 annualized).
Preferred Qualifications
  • The following certifications are preferred but NOT required: Crime Scene Investigation (levels I, II, or III), Forensic Photography, or Bloodstain Pattern Analysis, through the International Association for Identification (IAI).
