Forensic Science Technician

Salary: $41,537.60 - $61,526.40 Annually

This position will be assigned to the DNA section of the laboratory and will perform a variety of standardized tests and analysis in direct support of forensic and database laboratory examinations.

Duties:

  • Responsible for providing technical support to the laboratory by the preparation of reagents, sampling and preparation of items for further forensic examination, chemical and biological waste management, reagent and chemical inventory control, safety program duties and case related data entry using the applicable computer databases.
  • Responsible for the care, custody and maintenance of evidence submitted by law enforcement agencies as well as the convicted offender DNA samples that are processed by the laboratory.
  • Triages evidence coming into the laboratory, and performs sample accessioning, data entry and conversion of paper files into electronically formatted files. Performs screening tests on evidentiary items, documents and reports the results.
  • Operates analytical laboratory instrumentation and assembles resulting data.
  • Provides testimony in court on work performed as requested.
  • This position will not be responsible for interpretation of DNA data.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualification Requirements
  • Applicants must possess an associate's degree with an emphasis in laboratory technology, chemistry, biology, physics, or a related field to qualify for positions in this job classification.
Additional Qualification Requirements
  • For select positions, applicants may be required to meet one or more of the additional qualification requirements listed below.
    • A minimum of twelve semester hours of education, six months of full-time experience, or an equivalent combination of both in the following areas:
      • 072 photography
      • 108 DNA analysis
      • 005 crime scene
    • A minimum of six months of full-time experience in the following areas:
      • 049 latent fingerprint development
      • 102 firearms
  • Applicants who wish to be considered for these select positions must describe on the application how each additional qualification requirement is met.

  • Applicants for this job class must be able to pass a thorough background investigation conducted by the Division of Criminal Investigation.
  • Travel, including overnight travel, may be required for positions in this class. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas
  • Applicants must possess or be able to obtain an Iowa Driver's License.
