Crime Scene Investigator

Salary: $50,507.18 - $61,391.41 Annually

Under general supervision, the incumbent performs the technical work involved in photographing, gathering and preserving evidence collected from a crime or fire scene; assists in training staff personnel in the areas of photography and evidence collection; testifies in court as an expert witness involving matters of identification; and maintains the Evidence and Property Section of the Sheriff's Office.

Duties:

Essential Functions
  • Responds to crime scenes and assists in the investigations by photographing, processing evidence for prints and evidence collection;
  • Lifts, evaluates and enters prints into state automated latent print systems; assists in maintaining the Property and Evidence Section by storing, releasing and purging evidence;
  • Maintains and files a variety of records and documents pertaining to identification work.
  • Utilizes cameras and video equipment to record crime scenes and injury photos; appears in court as an expert witness involving issues of identification;
  • Processes evidence for prints using various methods of chemical techniques;
  • Orders and maintains photographic and evidence packaging supplies for field personnel; acts in capacity of staff photographer as required;
  • Attends autopsies for the purpose of taking photographs and evidence collection;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements:

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED Certificate .
Experience:
  • Sufficient working experience in criminal identification techniques to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed below (an Associate in Arts degree in Criminal Justice or a related field is preferred).
Knowledge of:
  • methods and techniques of identification; modern photographic techniques and equipment; law and policies related to the rules of evidence collection and disposal.
Ability to:
  • take fingerprints; take and develop photographs; correlate information received from a variety of sources, and exercise sound judgment in interpreting such information and in drawing conclusions; maintain detailed records and prepare reports; communicate effectively in court; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during course of work.
License:
  • Some positions in this classification may require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties.
