Forensic Scientist 1 – Crime Scene & Biology Processing

The Oregon State Police Forensics Laboratory in Bend, Oregon is hiring for one (1) Full-Time, Permanent, Forensic Scientist position.

The purpose of the Forensic Services Division (FSD) is to serve the people of Oregon with the highest standards of science, ethics and professionalism in recovering, preserving, and analyzing physical evidence. The FSD provides unbiased scientific and technical services to all branches of the Criminal Justice System. The Bend Forensic Laboratory is part of the Forensic Services Division and is one of five laboratories throughout the state. The Bend Laboratory has a complement of 10 employees. The laboratory is primarily responsible to provide services to Deschutes, Jefferson, Crook, Klamath, Lake, Harney and Wheeler counties.

What will you do?
  • You will be performing technical and scientific functions as they relate to the Criminal Justice System and in accordance with the policies of the Department of State Police, Forensic Services Division, accreditation procedures, and laws of the State of Oregon.
  • This position requires your objective scientific thinking by being capable of independent planning and problem solving related to the analysis of evidence.
  • Your duties will include performing independent casework in the crime scene and biology processing disciplines which meets the quality standards of the Division.
  • In this position, you will also be responsible for responding to crime scenes in the field and participating in the response rotation as outlined in the OSPOA contract.
  • You will be preparing and maintaining accurate records, laboratory notes, and analytical reports to conform to accreditation standards, Division policies and procedures, and court required procedures.
  • In addition, the person in this position must be able to provide accurate court testimony and qualify results, conclusions, and opinions appropriately so their significance is understood.


Minimum Qualifications for the Forensic Scientist 1: ($6,319 - $8,567) (these must be addressed in your resume for full consideration):
  • Five years experience as a Forensic Scientist in an accredited Forensic Laboratory AND
  • A Bachelor's degree in a natural science such as biology, chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, physics, forensic science, pharmacology, bacteriology or a closely related field.
Minimum Qualifications for Forensic Scientist Entry (Underfill Option $5,364 - $6,638) (these must be addressed in your resume for full consideration):
  • Bachelor's degree in a natural science such as biology, chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, physics, forensic science, pharmacology, bacteriology, or a closely related field.
Preferred Skills (these must be addressed in your cover letter for full consideration):
  • Ability to excel as a team member in stressful environments and demonstrate high levels of emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to analyze information objectively and make reasoned, unbiased decisions.
  • Ability to communicate scientific information in a clear, effective and professional manner.
  • Ability to think creatively, critically and logically to find successful solutions.
  • Ability to self-initiate tasks, effectively manage time and triage competing demands with minimal supervision.
Special Qualifications:
  • Must possess a valid Oregon Driver License.
  • Must be able to provide sworn credible testimony in a criminal or civil proceeding arising from the performance of duties.
  • As a condition of employment and/or to routinely work in any of the Forensic Services Division’s laboratories in any capacity, all individuals are required to provide appropriate samples for inclusion into the confidential Staff DNA Identification Index.
