Duties:

Overview of the Position
  • The purpose of this position is to perform technical and scientific functions as they relate to the Criminal Justice System and in accordance with the policies of the Department of State Police, Forensic Services Division, accreditation procedures, and laws of the State of Oregon. This position requires objective scientific thinking by someone capable of independent planning and problem solving related to the analysis of evidence. Duties include performing independent casework in the Toxicology discipline which meets the quality standards of the Division. This includes accurate and timely analysis of evidence according to Division policies and procedures as well as processing at least one proficiency test per year for each forensic discipline performed. Preparing and maintaining accurate records, laboratory notes, and analytical reports to conform to accreditation standards, Division policies and procedures, and court required procedures. Maintaining individual productivity, as measured by requests per unit of time and based on percent of available analytical time, at a level consistent with Division standards. Managing assigned caseload, including appropriate and timely communication with law enforcement partners. Providing accurate court testimony and qualifies results, conclusions, and opinions appropriately so their significance is understood. Receives and provides training related to assigned duties. Maintaining expertise in assigned disciplines through career advancement training, Division In-Services and additional forensic discipline training, including reading and review of current and new technical literature; membership/participation in professional organizations and personal communications with other forensic experts. Providing casework support to the Toxicology discipline by preparing necessary reagents, standards and controls to ensure quality. Supporting OSP analysts by acting as a resource for the discipline. Performing other duties as needed or requested by the Laboratory Director or other supervisors of the Oregon State Police and assumes added responsibilities as authorized.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications for Forensic Scientist 1: ($6,319 - $8,567)
  • Five years experience as a Forensic Scientist in an accredited Forensic Laboratory
  • AND
  • A Bachelor's degree in a natural science such as biology, chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, physics, forensic science, pharmacology, bacteriology, or a closely related field.
Minimum Qualifications for Forensic Scientist Entry (Underfill Option $5,364 - $6,638):
  • Bachelor's degree in a natural science such as biology, chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, physics, forensic science, pharmacology, bacteriology, or a closely related field.
  • If you are selected to move forward in the selection process, you must provide official transcripts from all institutions of higher education that were used in the award of your degree.
Preferred Skills (These must be addressed in your cover letter for full consideration):
  • Demonstrated experience performing laboratory analysis
  • Demonstrated experience with analytical instrumentation including chromatographs, mass spectrometers and/or immunoassay techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate scientific information in a clear, effective and professional manner
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in writing with a diverse audience
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and communicate with a diverse team
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, meet both scheduled and unexpected deadlines, pivot to meet the changing needs of the work unit, respond in a professional manner under stress and work collaboratively with a diverse team
