Laboratory Supervisor

Salary: $72,636 - $120,703 per year

Employee will perform work managing daily operations of the Pattern Sciences Unit (Bloodstain Pattern Analysis; Firearms and Toolmarks; Footwear and Tire; and Latent Prints) directly supervising employees.

Examples of Duties:
  • Quality, administrative, and technical aspects (more if designated Technical Leader for one of the disciplines) of the Unit to include supervising; training; coaching staff and writing performance reviews.
  • Receive, review, and evaluate all requests for laboratory examinations in the Unit to determine priority, probative nature of samples and suitability for testing.
  • Ensure all requirements are met to maintain accreditation by ANSI-AQS National Accreditation Board within the Unit.
  • Maintain competency to perform casework analysis in at least one of the disciplines within the Unit.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience: Five (5) years of professional experience performing Laboratory work within at least one of the disciplines within the Pattern Sciences Unit in an accredited Laboratory. Supervisory experience is not required, but preferred.
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in a natural, physical or forensic science.
  • Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
  • Licenses, Registrations, Certifications or Special Requirements: Certification as required by any other Federal or State mandate, as require for the position of assignment.
  • Physical Ability: Ability to perform light physical effort, such as keyboarding, standing or staying in place for long periods of time and lifting, carrying and/or moving material weighing 20 pounds, and up to 50 pounds as required.
Preferred Criteria
  • Satisfy the qualifications required to serve as the Technical Leader for Firearms and Toolmarks per COMAR (excluding "B" section which states a Lab Director may appoint someone with over 9 year's experience in that discipline)
    • COMAR requires:
      • Bachelor's or advanced degree from an accredited university in Forensic Science, a natural science (such as chemistry, physics, or biology), or sub-specialty of a natural science (such as organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology)
      • Have documentation post-degree experience in Firearms and Toolmarks
        • Four (4) years with a baccalaureate degree
        • Three (3) years with a master's degree or
        • Two (2) years with a doctoral degree
  • Experience supervising and/or performing examinations for Latent Prints.
  • Supervisory and case management experience (accepting and assigning casework) in at least one of the disciplines within the Pattern Science Unit (Bloodstain Pattern Analysis, Firearms and Toolmarks, Blood Splatter, Footwear and Tire, and Latent Prints.
