Essential Task Functions:
  • Promotes and follows the City's mission statement, values and expectations.
  • Process and retain accurate, orderly records.
  • Receive evidence through intake lockers.
  • Sort evidence and properly assign it to protective storage.
  • Transfer information from paperwork to computer and file paperwork.
  • Properly maintain evidence labeling.
  • Respond to phone calls from the public regarding evidence.
  • Assist/train officers in evidence booking procedures.
  • Pull items and release them to the public.
  • Pull items and release them to officers for court.
  • Transport to and receive property and evidence from the state crime lab.
  • Research cases and sort items that are listed to be destroyed. Ensure items are destroyed and documentation is completed.
  • Update computer information for destroyed items.
  • Conduct audits of property room.
  • Maintain evidence room in a condition that it is prepared for outside audits at all times.
  • Send dispositions to officers on established intervals; receive dispositions back.
  • Send letters to the public on all property that is listed to be released.
  • Reorganize shelves after dispositions.
  • Assist with public fingerprinting services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:
  • Previous experience beneficial but not required for entry level position
  • Graduation from high school
Special Qualifications:
  • Valid Utah Driver's License required
  • Type Speed of 35 wpm minimum
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Integrity: Applicant must successfully pass a polygraph examination, background investigation and psychological evaluation.
  • Knowledge of: Occupational hazards and standard safety practices in evidence collection and storage; Principles, practices, methods, and techniques of collecting, preserving and storing evidence and property; Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations including administrative and department policies and procedures; Principles and procedures of record keeping. Basic computer skills.
  • Tool, Machine, Equipment Operation: regular use of a bar coding machine, computer, copy machine, telephone and motor vehicle.
  • Analytical Ability: Great adherence to policies and legal guidelines which could result in a considerable amount of liability to Layton City if evidence is not handled properly.

Work Environment:
  • Functions of the position generally performed in a controlled environment, in a typical office setting and confined storage area. Tasks require variety of physical activities, frequently involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Continuous use of motor skills; talking, hearing and seeing essential to performance of the job. Various levels of mental application required, i.e. memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, creative problem solving. Occasional local travel required in normal course of job performance.
