Crime Scene Supervisor

Salary: $24.37 - $28.02 Hourly

Leads, manages and supervises unit activity. Provides continuous support to personnel for instruction and assistance in the collection, protection and processing of evidence and scenes of crimes using the latest techniques and equipment. Performs comprehensive latent print comparisons. Performs any and all duties of Crime Scene and Evidence functions as needed. Ensures quality control for all applicable functions.

Duties:

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
  • Assigns duties to and evaluates performance of division employees.
  • Receives, prepares and transmits communications, instructions and policies.
  • Ensures compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assists and instructs employees in problem resolution.
  • Responds to and leads employees on serious crime scenes.
  • Coordinates unit training activities.
  • Provides quality control assurance in crime scene and evidence work.
  • Evaluates a crime scene utilizing disciplines related to crime scene investigation.
  • Documents scenes and / or evidence through photography, diagrams, logs, etc.
  • Coordinates crime scene evidence searches.
  • Processes evidence and scenes for latent fingerprints.
  • Handles, prepares, documents bio-hazardous evidence and scenes.
  • Attends autopsies, documenting through photography and collection of evidence.
  • Processes persons and / or evidence for trace evidence.
  • Utilizes special processes, methods and equipment for the detection / collection of trace evidence.
  • Photographs persons for injuries or identity purposes as requested.
  • Receives, evaluates, logs and stores latent fingerprints submitted.
  • Performs fingerprint comparisons utilizing comprehensive scientific methodologies.
  • Runs unknown finger latent prints through State AFIS database for suspect generation.
  • Runs unknown finger and palm latent prints through Cogent AFIS database for suspect generation.
  • Testifies in Courts of Law as an expert witness.
  • Writes comprehensive reports.
  • Instructs field officers in basic processing techniques and provides equipment for same.
  • Prepares quotes and research for equipment ordering.
  • Researches court dispositions for evidence disposal, prepares judicial documents of same.
  • Readily complies with departmental and county-wide policies and procedures.

Requirements:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Sitting for long periods of time.
  • Standing for long periods of time.
  • Working for 24 plus hours continuously when working major crime scene.
  • Exposure to powders and chemicals associated with evidence / scene processes.
  • Lifting of 50 plus lbs., kneeling, squatting, bending, and walking.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
  • Moderate to heavy noise levels.
  • Frequent exposure to unknown elements and diseases through contact with evidence, contact with the public, various crime scenes and autopsies.
  • Has frequent contact with other county employees, other law enforcement agencies, prosecution and defense attorneys, and the general public.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Never been convicted of a Class B or above offense
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Five (5) years crime scene experience
  • Two (2) years latent print comparison experience
  • Knowledge of evidence storage practices and related laws
  • Qualified as an expert witness in fingerprints in Texas Court of Law.
  • Five hundred (500) classroom hours related to crime scene and / latent print work and evidence room procedures (combined total)
  • Knowledge of legal and criminal justice systems
  • Obtain certification through IAI in crime scene and / or latent print work.
  • Knowledge of computers and software to include Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
EMPLOYMENT TESTING:
  • Employment is contingent on passing post-offer, pre-employment and periodic drug testing, motor vehicle report and extensive criminal background investigation.
IRREGULAR HOURS:
  • Available for call back 24 hours a day/7 days a week.
  • Non-Essential Personnel for Emergency Situations; unless employees are designated by Department Official or employees are in other offices that are open.
