The Johnson County Sheriff's Office Criminalistics Laboratory is seeking a qualified applicant for a Forensic Scientist position in our Controlled Substances Section.

This position will be hired as a Forensic Scientist Trainee, Forensic Scientist, or Senior Forensic Scientist based upon prior experience. The 2021 salary ranges, minimum Forensic Scientist Trainee to maximum Senior Forensic Scientist, are $23.30 - $43.80 ($48,472 – $91,104 annualized).

The major duties of this position include but are not limited to:
  • Conducting chemical and physical analyses and microscopic examinations on a variety of substances
  • Performing, processing, and reviewing GC/MS and FTIR instrumental data
  • Presenting information regarding controlled substance analysis to officers, deputies and/or citizens.
  • Participation in training, competency testing, and proficiency testing according to established protocols
  • Performing technical and administrative review of casework data
  • Rigorously following all safety manuals, standard operating procedures, and quality assurance/quality control procedures
  • Performing quality assurance/quality control procedures of reagents, equipment, and instrumentation as necessary
  • Documenting and performing casework duties in accordance with laboratory procedures, with minimal errors and no pattern of deficiencies
  • Assisting in ensuring conformance to laboratory accreditation standards
  • Attending continuing education/training courses, workshops, seminars, conferences and professional meetings as time and resources allow
  • Participating in method validation/verification studies as needed
  • Providing expert testimony in courts of law as subpoenaed


  • Educational requirements: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a closely related physical science, biology, or forensic science related area.
  • An acceptable driving record is required. This position requires successful completion of an extensive background check, which includes a polygraph and drug screen.
  • Experience requirements for Forensic Scientist: Two (2) years of experience in a forensic laboratory performing analyses on suspected controlled substances. Knowledge of the basic principles and applications of instrumentation (GC/MS and FTIR) and methodologies used to analyze controlled substance samples. Successful completion of a Controlled Substances training program with demonstrated competency. Salary range: $26.70 - 40.00 ($55,544 - $83,191 annualized).
  • Experience requirements for Senior Forensic Scientist: Five (5) years of independent forensic casework in the discipline of Controlled Substances. Courtroom testimony experience. Successful completion of a Controlled Substances training program, with demonstrated competency. Salary range: $29.20 – 43.80 ($60,736 - $91,104 annualized).
  • A selected candidate not meeting the experience requirements for Forensic Scientist or Senior Forensic scientist will be hired as a Forensic Scientist Trainee. Salary range: $23.30 - 34.90 ($48,472 - 72,583 annualized).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Chemistry major or a strong academic background in chemistry that includes organic chemistry and instrumental analysis.
