  • Supervise, assign, review, evaluate and participate in the work of staff responsible for identifying, documenting, collecting and preserving physical evidence of crime scene investigations;
  • Oversee and ensure the preservation of all items taken into evidence;
  • Testify in court regarding the chain of custody and integrity of evidence;
  • Ensure work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures and
  • Perform the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.


Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements - Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, social science, forensic science, chemistry, biology, or physical science;
  • and
  • Four (4) years of crime scene investigation experience;
  • and
  • To include two (2) years of supervisory experience.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must pass Drug Test, Criminal Records check and Background check.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
  • Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
  • Possession of a valid National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification within six (6) months from date of hire.
  • Must have successfully completed the Crime Scene Specialist (CSS) Training program or similar program.
  • Must successfully pass a physical agility test.
Preferred Knowledge
  • Operations, services, and activities of a crime scene investigation program
  • Principle of supervision, training and performance evaluation
  • Principles, practices, procedures, methods, and techniques used in evidence collection, protection, preservation, photography, and identification
  • Principles of chain of custody
  • Rules and procedures of providing expert testimony in court
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting
  • Office procedures, methods and equipment including computers
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices
  • Principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations
Preferred Skills & Abilities
  • Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review, evaluate and participate in the work of staff responsible for conducting crime scene investigations
  • Select, supervise, train and evaluate staff
  • Use a variety of specialized equipment and techniques to collect and analyze physical evidence
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Monitor, review and approve a variety of crime scene investigation reports
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures and recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives within assigned division
  • Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet and database applications
  • Oversee and perform forensic evidence collection, identification, and applicable field analysis functions
  • Oversee, investigate, document and process evidence at crime scenes
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ensures compliance and adherence to department rules and regulations and safe work practices and procedures governing the processing, collection and maintenance of physical evidence and property
  • Conduct informal and formal briefings related to crime scene investigations
  • Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
