This position is responsible for applying scientific principles to analyze, identify and classify physical evidence related to crime scenes.

80% Process crime scenes including:
  • Documentation through photography, sketching and note taking,
  • Recognition, recovery and preservation of physical evidence at the crime scene for further examination, and
  • Development of information at and/or of the crime scene through analytical observation of physical conditions and/or materials;
  • Latent Print Processing - Examines diverse items of physical evidence for the detection of latent prints. These processes will include mechanical (powders), chemical and light source techniques. (These powders and chemicals and the item of evidence itself can pose a biological or health damaging risk to the Crime Scene Investigator.);
  • Maintain the integrity of evidence by complying with evidence handling, marking, custody and case file;
  • Process latent prints and trace evidence; handle and package evidence, blood analysis and bullet path trajectory analysis;
  • File prints from crime scenes;
  • Complete sketches at and/or of scenes;
  • Utilize computer assisted design (CAD) to diagram crime scenes and/or create facial composites;
  • Complete and file reports on crime scene investigations; and
  • Maintain documentation of autopsies from the Medical Examiner's Office.
  • In criminal proceedings, qualifies as an expert witness each time based on education, training, experience and current proficiency. Expert testimony is provided to the court as an opinion based on an individual's proven forensic judgment. An analyst must present clear, accurate and truthful testimony in a professional manner regarding chain of custody, examinations performed and/or opinions rendered. Secures the credibility of this testimony under cross-examination which may involve the use of opposing experts.
  • Monitor the condition of equipment, performs maintenance and recommend service as required;
  • Maintain supplies;
  • Assist in keeping the stationary and mobile labs clean;
  • Keep abreast of new equipment and techniques that are available;
  • Offer local school educational programs relating to crime scene investigations;
  • Provide instruction to participants of the Citizen's Police Academy;
  • Process evidence according to departmental procedures; and
  • Perform other duties as required


EXTERNAL and INTERNAL RELATIONSHIP and COMMUNICATION REQUISITE - Be able to maintain relations and communications with the following:
  • State and Local Police and Fire Departments;
  • State Fire Marshal;
  • FDLE, FBI and DEA;
  • Clerk of the Courts; and
  • General public to include private citizens, businesses and governmental and municipal entities.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE - An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered, provided that the education and experience is in a relevant and related field.
  • Associates Degree in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, Physical or Natural Science or a closely related field.
  • Three years experience working in crime scene investigations, with a law enforcement agency and advanced training within the Crime Scene Discipline.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver?s license; and
  • Must attend in-service training to maintain certifications.
  • Must be able to comprehend and communicate fluently in verbal and written English;
  • Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations;
  • Must be able to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals;
  • Must be able to effectively present information to groups and respond to questions from managers, attorneys, investigators and/or detectives;
  • Must be able to assist in the removal of bodies, human remains and other evidence;
  • Must have excellent analytical and organization skills as well as attention to detail;
  • Must have basic computer skills including but not limited to word processing and spreadsheet applications.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Work is performed in various environments. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Depending on assignment, the employee may be required to work long and irregular work hours including evenings and weekends. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to a wide range of conditions, many which are unpleasant and/or hazardous. The employee may be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases, allergenic substances, insects and animals. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions and various terrains. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, fumes, airborne particles, toxic and caustic chemicals. Employee must package and handle biohazardous fluids and materials.
  • 8:30am-5:00pm M-F and on call.
