Crime Scene Investigator

Salary: $41,530.51 per year

The Crime Scene Investigator performs specialized technical procedures in criminal identification matters at crime scenes and within the agency laboratory. The duties performed include photography, scene documentation, collection and preservation of physical evidence, latent fingerprint processing and collection of trace evidence and biological samples.   • Respond to crime scenes to identify, collect, and preserve physical evidence.
  • Ensure all evidence is documented appropriately (notes, photography and/or video recordings, measurements and sketches).
  • Collect and preserve latent fingerprints/imprints at the crime scene and in the laboratory using powders and chemicals.
  • Collect and preserve biological samples of potential genetic material (DNA) at the crime scene and in the laboratory.
  • Evaluate bloodstains and bullet trajectories.
  • Recover impression evidence using photography and a variety of casting materials.
  • Prepare diagrams and written reports on actions, observations and conclusions of crime scenes and forensic analysis findings.
  • Operate a variety of equipment including, but not limited to, photographic equipment, metal detectors, alternate light sources (ALS), laboratory equipment and evidence collection devices.
  • Maintain proper chain?of?custody of all physical evidence.
  • Prepare evidence for submission to forensic laboratories.
  • Prepare shipment documents.
  • Attend autopsies.
  • Testify in court proceedings, hearings and depositions about investigative and analytical methods and findings.
  • Conduct training for agency employees in proper crime scene processing techniques and evidence packaging.
  • Participate in Sheriff's Office involved community activities, such as summer camps for children and teens, teaching them about forensic procedures.
  • Work Hazards include biohazardous materials (i.e. decomposition, body fluids), sharp objects, strong or foul odors, extreme heat exposure, chemicals, woods and insects.
  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License.
  • Associates Degree required, Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, & Outlook.
  • Must be available to work on?call.
  • Knowledge of ScenePD, Aegis Record Management, Driver and Vehicle Information Database (DAVID), Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) and eAgent.
