Firearm Examiner (Forensic Scientist 2, 1 or Trainee)

Salary:

  • Trainee - Forensic Scientist 1, salary $21.60
  • Forensic Scientist 1, salary range $25.71-$37.82/hourly: $53,682-$78,968/annually
  • Forensic Scientist 2, salary range $29.50 - $43.77/hourly: $61,596-$91,392/annually

This announcement will be used to fill one vacant Firearm Examiner position at either the Forensic Scientist 2, Forensic Scientist 1 or Trainee-Forensic Scientist 1 level. This position will be filled in the BCA Lab in St. Paul, MN.

Duties:

  • This full-time permanent position will provide to the Criminal Justice System the results and interpretation of analyses of submitted evidence.
  • This position participates in the design and validation of new technology and methods for use in casework.
  • Assists in the development of training programs and trains new scientists in section methods and procedures.
  • Testifies as an expert witness as required.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

Forensic Scientist 2
  • A Bachelor's degree in a physical science such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Criminalistics, or Forensic Science from an accredited university
  • Two years experience as a Forensic Firearms Examiner in a forensic laboratory
  • Testified in a court of law as an expert witness in forensic analysis
  • Excellent computer, customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
Forensic Scientist 1
  • A Bachelor's degree in a physical science such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Criminalistics, or Forensic Science from an accredited university
  • Experience equivalent to one year of full-time professional level experience performing scientific laboratory analyses. NOTE: A Master’s degree or PhD in any of the above mentioned degrees may be substituted for 6 months of professional level experience
  • Excellent computer, customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
Trainee - Forensic Scientist 1
  • A Bachelor's degree in a physical science such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Criminalistics, or Forensic Science from an accredited university
  • Excellent computer, customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

Forensic Scientist 2
  • Masters or PhD degree in a physical science such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Criminalistics or Forensic Science from an accredited university.
  • Two years of experience as a Forensic Firearms Examiner in a ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory
  • Is a certified Firearms Examiner through the Association of Firearms and Toolmarks Examiners (AFTE)
Forensic Scientist 1
  • Masters or PhD degree in a physical science such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Criminalistics or Forensic Science from an accredited university.
  • Experience in a forensic laboratory gained through an internship or work experience; or work experience doing examinations similar to those conducted in a forensic or analytical lab.
Forensic Scientist 1-Trainee
  • Masters or PhD degree in a physical science such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Criminalistics or Forensic Science from an accredited university.
  • Experience in a forensic laboratory gained through an internship or work experience; or work experience doing examinations similar to those conducted in a forensic or analytical lab.
Physical Requirements
  • Requires occasionally moving and transporting 50 pound items and frequently moving and transporting objects such as heavy tools and heavy file boxes.
  • This job may require positioning self to move to a significant degree across rough terrain or may involve maintaining a stationary position for extended periods.
