Property and Evidence Technician

Salary: Starting salary ranges from $18.00 to $24.00 per hour depending on experience and training.

The Property and Evidence Technician is responsible for processing and maintaining evidence objects through tracking, storage, preservation, and disposal. Incumbent gathers and analyzes intelligence data to compile reports and charts, among other responsibilities. Strict adherence to protocols and guidelines is required.

Examples of Duties - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents in this position.   • Maintains complete and accurate documentation of all evidence or seizures processed, submitted, stored, transferred and/or released by NWNTF officers; assists associated agencies with evidence/seizure duties as directed
  • Responds to crime scenes, as required, for documentation and/or to maintain the chain of custody of evidence
  • Ensures evidence is bundled, transported, stored, and handled in a manner that preserves its integrity
  • Follows established policies and guidelines including chain of custody, evidence access requests, shipping/transporting procedures, and others
  • Maintains chain of custody, inventory control, and safeguards the security of all items of evidence from acceptance through release and/or disposal
  • Conducts periodic audits and annual inventories of evidence following established policies; purges items of evidence and property according to judicial, statutory, and departmental directives including the destruction, return of property to the lawful owner, or selling of property at public auction; coordinates public auctions as assigned
  • Utilizes assigned data system to maintain digital library of departmental evidentiary files, photographs, and audio recordings; provides copies to courts, attorneys, and public following established policies and laws
  • Provides testimony in court regarding evidence process, when required
  • Transports evidence to and from the State Crime Lab and other locations, as directed
  • Gathers, tracks, analyzes, correlates, and evaluates intelligence information from officers, criminal reports, law enforcement databases and open-source platforms
  • Prepares written reports, oral reports, and charts based on analysis of intelligence data
  • Validates intelligence data using open source or confidential data sources
  • Tracks department statistics and completes grant reports as assigned
  • Conducts records checks and assists with general clerical duties within the department
  • Maintains confidentiality of non-public records and makes available all data and information deemed a public record by the North Dakota Century Code.


Education, Experience and License/Certifications:
  • Bachelor’s or Associates degree Criminal Justice, Operations Management, Supply Chain and Logistics, Accounting or similar;
  • OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid North Dakota driver’s license or equivalent
  • Must obtain and maintain NCIC security certification from the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigations
Special Working Conditions:
  • Work is intermittently performed in a windowless storage facility and off-site internal/external environments with exposure to inclement weather, varying temperatures, and noxious fumes; use of personal protective equipment (PPE) will be required when handling items known or suspected of harboring contamination from chemicals, bodily fluids, bio-hazardous materials, drugs, flammables, and otherwise unidentified contaminants.
  • Transportation of evidence to regional centers may sporadically require travel to destinations within 250 miles of Williston.
