Fingerprint Classification Clerk

Salary: $46,560.00 - $52,843.00 Annually

The office is seeking an individual with excellent organizational, social and communication skills to fill a position within the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI). The position offers a unique and challenging experience for a highly motivated person. The selected candidate will be assigned to work as a fingerprint classification clerk within BCI.

Primary duties include the following:
  • The processing of applicants for a fingerprint based national criminal history check at the Attorney General’s Customer Service Center, located at 4 Howard Avenue in Cranston, RI.
  • Operation of an Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) Livescan machine.
  • Processing of applicant criminal history inquiries through the use of the AFIS Client Workstation.
  • To have a working understanding of the Rhode Island Computerized Criminal History (CCH) system and the workflow between the AFIS environment and the CCH environment.
  • Operation of BCI’s Quick Search two finger scan, a process for matching a two-finger scan with an existing ten print fingerprint card in the AFIS system.
  • To have a knowledge and understanding of all State statutes that require a National Background fingerprint check and understand what may constitute disqualifying information.
  • To be familiar with all FBI policies and procedures that have a direct impact on the Central Repository record of the State of Rhode Island.
  • Scanning fingerprints that are submitted by mail from out-of-state applicants and to update that information in the CCH database.
  • To answer all phone calls and emails regarding questions from law enforcement agencies and civil applicants.
  • Customer service at BCI’s front window, including the processing of State criminal history checks (non-fingerprint based).


Education/Experience/Special Requirements:
  • Applicants should have excellent computer skills, be well organized and comfortable dealing with the public.
  • Experience with criminal justice and criminal identification procedures is preferred but not mandatory
