Latent Print Examiner II employees who obtain and maintain Latent Print certification through the International Association for Identification (IAI) are eligible for 5% additional pay.

  • Latent Print Examiner II positions perform latent print analysis in the crime laboratory; search latent print evidence through Automated Latent Print Systems (ALPS); perform latent print comparisons for identifications; prepare and maintain records of examinations; prepare materials for presentation of evidence in court; testify in court; provide training to latent print unit personnel; and perform other duties as assigned.


  • You must be a United States citizen or have the current legal right to work in the United States.
EDUCATION: You must meet ONE of the following options:
  • Completion of 80 hours of formalized training in latent print examinations by a recognized law enforcement agency, P.O.S.T., F.B.I., Department of Justice or a recognized professional institute.
  • Associates Degree or higher in a forensic or physical science.
  • Certificate in Forensic Technology that includes college-level course work in basic fingerprinting and advanced fingerprinting.
  • Two years of full-time, professional Latent Print Examiner experience analyzing, comparing, evaluating, and identifying latent prints.
  • One or more years of full-time professional experience as a Latent Print Examiner Aide with the City of San Diego may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.
  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.
  • Experience entering and searching latent print evidence in Automated Latent Print Systems (ALPS).
  • Court testimony experience in latent print identifications.
  • International Association for Identification (IAI) Latent Print Certification.
  • Possession of a Bachelor's Degree or higher in a physical science.
  • Proof of degree/transcripts, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
  • Proof of training certificates, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
  • Proof of Forensic Technology Certificate, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
  • For City of San Diego employees, proof of Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA), if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
