Firearms Technician - IBIS/NIBN

The purpose of this classification is to be responsible for case management and BrassTrax / Matchpoint System operations. NIBIN is the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network. IBIS is the Integrated Ballistic Identification System. The IBIS/NIBIN Tech uses IBIS or other ballistic imaging equipment to examine physical evidence associated with firearm investigations. Additionally, the tech will safely test-fire a variety of firearms and identify ammunition components, record test results, and work under the close guidance of crime scene and investigative supervisors.

The following duties are normal for this position.
  • Primary operator of BrassTrax/Matchpoint system.
  • Prioritize and manage caseload for Firearms Examiner.
  • Receive and manage casing entry from outside agencies.
  • Complete eTrace on all firearms when needed.
  • Perform test fires on all firearms as needed.
  • Analytical data reviews: provide PD / ATF with monthly statistics, i.e., confirmed Hits and Acquisitions
  • Maintain all records relating to NIBIN, eTrace, and other databases.
  • Inventories, documents and evaluates various types of firearms for possible entry into the IBIS database.
  • Test fires appropriate calibers and types of firearms.
  • Issues reports accurately reflecting the results of examinations.
  • Testifies in court relating to the results of the examination.
  • Assists firearms examiner in interpreting, analyzing, and evaluating the results of IBIS and/or firearms examinations and prepare draft reports based on results.
  • Cleans and maintains firearms and examination-related resources such as bullet recovery systems, range, and tools.
  • Routinely works with the firearms examiner to maintain basic project interaction.
  • Assists in maintaining 24-hour entry and 48-hour correlation of results for Matchpoint.
  • Enter information through Etrace.
  • Establish scheduled drop-off and pick-up dates and times for outside agencies.
  • Photograph items/evidence.
  • Store and manage ammunition inventory.
  • Maintain continuing education including through conferences and classes.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Prefer Bachelor’s degree in a related field (science, criminal justice…).
  • Law enforcement or related experience is preferred.
  • High level of judgment and decision-making abilities are expected.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office suite and other office practices and procedures.
  • Must have a “clean” criminal history and free of any issues that may impeach character as a witness in court preceding’s.
  • Must be detail orientated and have a high level of organizational skills.
  • Must be able to pass an in-depth background investigation and receive NCIC certification as well as possible security clearances.
  • Must be able to pass certification and recertification training in order to maintain user rights to specialized equipment (BrassTrax / Matchpoint).
