The Forensic Supervisor possesses all or the ability to the requisite knowledge, skills, and physical abilities incumbent upon an entry level Crime Scene Technician. The Forensic Supervisor performs administrative, operation, technical and public relations duties and tasks specific to the position. The Supervisor of Forensics directly oversees the processing of major crime scenes which includes documentation, processing, collection and analysis of evidence and supervises personnel who perform duties that involve the collection and analysis of evidence.

The Forensic Supervisor may perform other related duties and tasks, as required and shall have the physical, mental and emotional abilities to perform the essential job duties of the position.

Essential Functions:
  • Responds to crime scenes as required on a 24-hours per day, seven days per week on-call schedule.
  • Documents crime scenes by photography, video recording, sketching, diagramming and/or mapping as deemed necessary. Utilizes the mapping software to document scenes and complete a computer aided diagram.
  • Locates, identifies, preserves, collects and properly packages evidence; ensures the integrity of the evidence by proper handling, processing and safe-keeping of evidence.
  • Photographs evidence, victims and injuries as necessary. Assists victims/witnesses with facial composite of suspect(s)
  • Assists officers in conducting property searches and other activities as required.
  • Logs in all evidence; maintains related records; conducts periodic evidence inventory. Receives and disposes of evidence submitted by uniformed officers.
  • Disposes of drugs, weapons, bio-hazardous materials, auction items and various other confiscated items according to established procedures.
  • Deposits confiscated currency.
  • Maintains order, neatness and cleanliness of evidence room; maintains assigned equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment; orders and picks up supplies as needed. Transports evidence to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for analysis. Assists in supervising the duties of the Evidence Custodian.
  • Performs a wide variety of routine office tasks, including but not limited to answering the telephone, preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, entering computer data, etc.
  • Operates a vehicle, two-way radio, camera, video equipment, fingerprint kit, metal detector, crime scene processing equipment, and other police-issued equipment, as well as a variety of other equipment including a computer, telephone, calculator, etc. Exercises care and safety in the use of equipment required to complete assigned tasks.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, co- workers, City personnel, court personnel, medical examiner, photo processors, and the general public.
  • Assists in the development of training, operations and other tasks associated with the Forensic Unit.
  • Coordinates and supervises staff activities and schedules; including call-out notifications.
  • Develops and plans capital improvement projects and purchases and ongoing improvement strategies for service.
  • Develops, evaluates and monitors the Forensic Units day to day activities.
  • Monitor employee productivity and provide constructive feedback and coaching.
  • Ensure adherence to the City of Kissimmee and the Kissimmee Police Department’s policies and procedures.


Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required
  • Requires a two (2) year degree from an accredited college or university or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience of working within law enforcement.
  • Three (3) years supervisory experience.
  • Must be able to obtain certification(s) in crime scene procedures and others as deemed necessary by the Department.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state of Florida driver’s license.
PREFERRED Qualifications
  • Is knowledgeable of or the ability to obtain knowledge of methods, policies and procedures of the Police Department pertaining to specific duties of the Crime Scene Technician. Technician is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has the ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures and related information. Has working knowledge of up-to-date methods of law enforcement and investigative procedures. Has thorough knowledge of crime scene processing methodologies, equipment, tools and materials. Has thorough knowledge of the proper methods of evidence handling, packaging, storage, security and disposal. Has thorough knowledge of modern laboratory and office practices and technology.
  • Has thorough knowledge of proper English usage, vocabulary, spelling and basic mathematics. Has knowledge of the computer and other technical terminology used within the department; has skill in the use of computers for data and word processing. Is skilled in applying a responsible attention to details necessary in preparing reports and correspondence. Is able to read and interpret a variety of materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Is able to establish effective record keeping systems; is able to maintain records accurately and with confidentiality as required.
  • Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision. Is able to use independent judgment in performing routine and non-routine tasks. Has the ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Is able to provide assistance and support to various departments, supervisors, Co-workers and the general public as needed. . Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
  • Knows how to perform duties in a courteous manner and communicate effectively with a variety of public and private groups as prescribed. Has knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry. Is capable of working under stressful conditions as required. Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be physically able to operate a vehicle and a variety of automated office machines and equipment including a computer, telephone, adding machine, etc. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work; must be able to reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, climb, balance, and lift/carry weights of up to fifty pounds.
  • Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interaction with internal and external entities with whom the position interacts.
  • Performs described Essential Functions and related assignments efficiently and effectively in order to produce quantity of work which consistently meets established standards and expectations.
  • Assumes responsibility for completing assigned work. Completes assigned work within deadlines in accordance with directives, policy, standards and prescribed procedures. Maintains accountability for assigned responsibilities in the technical, human and conceptual areas.
  • Exercises analytical judgment in areas of responsibility. Identifies issues or situations as they occur and specifies decision objectives. Identifies or assists in identifying alternative solutions to issues or situations. Implements decisions in accordance with prescribed and effective policies and procedures and with a minimum of errors. Seeks expert or experienced advice where appropriate and researches issues, situations and alternatives before exercising judgment.
Working Conditions:
  • Works indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Is able to perform duties professionally despite exposure to various uncomfortable and/or hazardous conditions, including exposure to odors, toxic agents, smoke, dusts, disease, violence, explosives, poor lighting, etc. Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort, typically involving some kneeling, pushing, crawling and lifting.
