Crime Scene Technician

Salary: $39,374.40 - $66,872.00 Annually

This is technical work in processing crime scenes. Work involves ensuring the orderly collection, categorization, classification, safe transport and storage of evidence gathered at a crime scene. Employees work with considerable independence, subject to instructions or orders to meet special operating circumstances.

Duties:

  • Identifies, collects, examines, interprets, classifies, preserves, and presents evidence from crime scenes, such as biological evidence, latent fingerprints, tire prints, firearms, shoe sprints, tool marks and other physical evidence.
  • Processes evidence in the field or workstation using special powders, chemical solutions, forensic light sources, and various cameras, lenses, and filters to develop and preserve evidence.
  • Prepares detailed reports of scenes that have been processed and any involvement during the investigation.
  • Photographs major crime scene and serious accidents.
  • Responds to dangerous scenes which may involve; armed and dangerous persons, dangerous animals, persons or article with contagious/communicable diseases, hazards concern work around active roadways, emergency situations and in confined spaces.
  • Performs presumptive chemical testing to identify various types of substances, including blood and narcotics.
  • Provides testimony relevant to the work performed in court and departmental hearings.
  • Works with investigations personnel to ensure the proper preparation of evidence for court, departmental hearings, and shooting review boards.
  • Coordinate with the Alabama department of Forensic Science for evidence analysis.
  • Attends post-mortem examinations to assist in the collection of desired evidence.
  • Ensures workstation and assigned areas are stocked with evidence collection supplies and kept in an organize manner.
  • Teaches courses to police cadets and visiting agencies, local schools, and continuing education classes.
  • Provides photography for special events.
  • Researches and assists in the development of new crime scene and laboratory techniques.
  • Assists other agencies in criminal investigations.
  • Requires regular and prompt attendance plus the ability to work well with others and work well as a team.

Requirements:

Minimum Education, Training and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education with major course work in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, Crime Scene Management, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws and ordinances, particularly the laws of arrest evidence.
  • Knowledge of methods, principles and technical procedures of gathering and preserving physical evidence.
  • Knowledge of fingerprint classification and comparison. Knowledge of courtroom procedures.
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department.
  • Knowledge of criminal behavior along with experience in identifying case variables in order to identify crime trends and patterns.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in the use and care of a personal computer.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid driver's license
