Fingerprint Examiner

Receives, evaluates, marks, classifies, submits, and compares hard copy and electronic ten-print and palm impressions utilizing Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). Assigns personal identification numbers (PIN) to newly received fingerprints, and confirms that fingerprints already on file are placed under existing PIN. This serves as a tracking tool for the identification process including aliases names. Prepares and submits logs and reports of findings and workflow. Obtains ink print impressions from the public as well as major case print impressions from deceased bodies. Performs at least 65 percent of the time in the collection, examination, documentation, or analysis of physical evidence having potential biological, chemical, or contamination, or use chemicals, processes, or materials that may have carcinogenic or health damaging properties in the analysis of said evidence. Receive and compare fingerprints to known fingerprints for verification of identity on documents such as trespass warnings, records challenges, pawn tickets, and prior convictions or judgments. May receive subpoenas to testify in a court of law on any matter involving above job description when needed.

Tasks and Policies
  • Maintains records, libraries, and office files.
  • Evaluates hardcopy and electronic ten-prints and palm prints to determine sufficient quality for entry into the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). Classifies prints and enters them in database utilizing identification numbers.
  • Searches databases and performs inquiries into local, state or federal criminal information system to verify identity. Marks identified matches. Finds, tracks and reports aliases.
  • Takes, records and maintains fingerprint, palm print and foot print impressions of offenders as well as persons requiring fingerprint verification including employment, wrongful name use and identity theft.
  • Successfully completes all assignments to specifications, within specified timeframe and budget as directed and in accordance with agency policies and regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Arrives on time for work, limits breaks, and lunches to the allotted time, and leaves on time. Uses leave in accordance with General Orders; communicates and cooperates with management in providing proper notice of leave; patterns and amounts of leave usage (not including legitimate, properly scheduled and approved leave and protected leave).
  • Volume of work accomplished is consistent with position requirements and produced within quality tolerance standards.
  • Works with other team members to achieve group goals by contributing ideas in group settings, accepting ideas contributed by others, operating within team rules, participating in team meetings, working with team members to improve job knowledge and skills, putting team goals over personal goals, and supporting team leaders once decisions are made.
  • Follows standard office procedures, safety policies and procedures and Agency General Orders.
  • Maintains good interpersonal relations (the manner in which the employee responds emotionally and verbally) with the public, other employees, and supervisors. This policy also relates to the image the employee projects and includes cleanliness and personal grooming.
  • Operates and cares for equipment, tools, and vehicles according to prescribed standards and schedules.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Associate's degree or higher; or high school diploma/GED with (2) years experience preferred.
  • Minimum of twenty (20) hours of IAI (International Association of Identification) approved, or equivalent ten-print training required.
  • Must obtain IAI approved Ten Print Examiner certification within two (2) years of achieving the required education and experience.
  • AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) experience preferred.
  • Valid Florida driver license required.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to accurately enter and/or retrieve information from various computer systems and/or programs in a timely manner
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in safeguarding confidential or sensitive information.
  • Ability to generate written documentation in an accurate, concise, legible, and timely manner as required by the position.
  • Ability to classify fingerprints and to file and search fingerprint records.
  • Ability to collect, organize and evaluate data and to develop logical conclusions.
  • Knowledge of procedures and techniques used in obtaining, examining and comparing ten-print and other impressions to make proper identification.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment including computers and various software applications.
  • Skill in taking quality fingerprints, palm prints, and foot prints.
  • Skill in identifying and comparing prints.
  • Required to sit and use hands and fingers, to handle or feel.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb stairs or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Requires close vision.
