Drug Screening Chemist

Salary: $30,518 - $53,101 Annually

This position will perform forensic analysis of biological samples in criminal and death investigations within an American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT) certified laboratory.

Duties:

  • This position will perform testing for the presence of alcohol, drugs, poisons in samples collected by law enforcement agencies throughout the state in addition to the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator.
  • Incumbent will prepare legally defensible reports from Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), and Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID), and computer reports, and provide factual and/or expert testimony in a court of law when needed.

Requirements:

Ideal Candidate
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or closely related field and experience with:
    • Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry;
    • Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionization Detector;
    • Handling biological specimens and/or drugs of abuse;
    • Providing testimony in a court of law
Minimum Qualification
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or closely related field and two (2) years paid experience in chemical experimentation and analysis in a laboratory setting.
Substitutions
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent AND 6 years of experience
  • Associate's degree or higher in any field AND 6 years of experience
  • Associate's degree in the field(s) specified in the minimum qualification AND 4 years of experience
  • Bachelor's degree in the field(s) specified in the minimum qualification AND 2 years of experience
  • Master's degree or higher in the field(s) specified in the minimum qualification AND 0 years of experience
Employment Requirements
  • Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment. In state and out of state travel may be required.
  • Successful completion of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is required.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in a fully functional laboratory containing biological, chemical, physical, and radiological hazards. Incumbent will be required to use all applicable safety equipment provided by the employer and follow all safety precautions specified by the employer.
  • There will be extended standing, repetitive trunk/arm/hand/neck movements with computer usage or assay/methodologies utilized.
  • Work involves using high voltage electronic instrumentation, and high pressure gas cylinders.
  • Ability to lift/push up to 50 lbs.
  • Some travel with occasional overnight stay may be required.
