Forensic Toxicologist

El Paso County Coroner's Office, Colorado Springs, Colorado

Salary: $64,000.00 - $68,000.00 Annually

Analyzes biological specimens to detect, identify, confirm, and quantify drugs and/or toxic substances in order to support forensic laboratory operations and assist Coroner’s Offices throughout the State. Defends data as expert witness in city, county, district, and military courts. Consults with coroners, medical examiners, and attorneys regarding interpretation of data.

Duties:

  • Performs comprehensive instrumental and chemical analyses of biological specimens to assist the Coroner, Medical Examiner, and Chief Forensic Toxicologist in establishing cause and manner of death in autopsy cases.
  • Validates new and revalidates existing analytical methods as needed.
  • Serves as member of disaster team when designated by Coroner.
  • Prepares and presents clear, concise, and accurate written reports and expert testimony in court.
  • Prepares manuscripts for publication in scientific journals. Presents scientific findings at national forensic meetings.
  • Participates in training Resident Pathologist as part of CAP Forensic Pathology Rotation Program.
  • Assists in internship program in Forensic Toxicology for selected college students.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related field; graduate degree preferred.
  • Experience in an analytical or clinical laboratory preferred.
  • Knowledge of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic interactions.
  • Extensive knowledge of analytical laboratory methods, procedures, and equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge and skills in comprehensive analytical chemistry practices, methods, applications, and instrumentation including GC-MS and LC-MS/MS.
  • Ability to prepare and present clear, concise, and accurate written reports and expert testimony in court.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, and drug screen.
Licenses/Certificates
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s License.
Work Conditions
  • Duties are primarily performed in a laboratory environment with daily exposure to body fluids, toxic chemicals, and gases of varying types. Due to highly potential exposure, vaccination for Hepatitis B and annual tuberculosis skin tests are provided. Any staff who refuses such vaccination/testing must provide annually written documentation stating the reason(s), which will be kept on file. Some travel may be required.
