Evidence/Crime Scene Custodian

Salary: $13.96 Hourly

Part time position

Collects, identifies, preserves, processes, and disposes of physical evidence and found property in compliance with State Law and local ordinances. Responsible for the control, safekeeping, and final disposition of all property and evidence collected by the Police Department. Duties include processing incoming property and evidence casework; marking, cataloging and receipting exhibits; and maintaining accurate examination records. Requires a variety of work hours, including week days, weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Duties:

  • Collects, identifies, preserves, processes, and disposes of physical evidence and found property in compliance with State Law and local ordinances. Provides property and evidence related information to the public and government agencies.
  • Prepares reports and correspondence dealing with evidence collection and identification to include, but not limited to, completion of Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) lab submittal forms.
  • Conducts peripheral casework such as marking, cataloging and receipting exhibits being examined or transferred between the department and examination laboratories and maintaining accurate records of the examinations performed.
  • Prepares documents and evidence for court presentations and provides testimony in criminal court cases when necessary.
  • Performs administrative duties associated with the position.
  • Cross-trains to learn evidence collection and crime scene processing.
  • Assists in preparation for, response to, and recovery from, the impacts of a wide variety of disasters or emergency situations and may be temporarily assigned to other duties, locations, and shifts.
  • Meets attendance requirements.
  • Promotes positive customer service environment internally and externally.
  • Performs other job related functions as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Basic skill level using Microsoft Office products.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and project a consumer friendly environment.
  • Knowledge of the rules of evidence and the techniques involving the collection and preservation of evidence.
  • Knowledge of photography and the duplication of photographs and videotapes as it relates to property/evidence casework.
  • Knowledge of and experience with RMS/Tiburon.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze instructions and/or data effectively, including technical procedures, policies, instructions and legal codes.
  • Ability to work independently.
