The Pennsylvania State University Policy and Public Safety department is seeking a Property and Evidence Technician who will perform a variety of technical and administrative duties in support of the organization's evolving property/evidence needs and efforts. The Property and Evidence Technician is expected to assure that all evidence and property is collected according to best practices, legal requirements and department policy. They will be assigned to train personnel on property and evidence protocols and processing, as well as collection and storage of evidence.

  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, properly processing, packaging, and analyzing evidence collected, working with investigators to log all evidence, obtain court dispositions, obtain evidence destruction orders, and destroying evidence in accordance with official documents.
  • The Technician will be responsible for handling lost and found, property, and evidence of all grades of crimes.
  • Other duties include assisting in conducting audits and inventories for accountability and accreditation purposes, to stay current with federal, state and local legal precedents and court decisions pertaining to property and evidence issues, photographing crime scenes, providing training and updates to staff to assure best practices are being considered, and adhering to a flexible work schedule and wavering workflow.
  • The Property and Evidence Technician is an individual contributor who handles evidence at the University Park police station but will provide support and expertise to all University Police locations throughout the Commonwealth, with travel sometimes required to those operations outside of University Park.
  • No budgetary or supervisor responsibilities are assigned but the position will require diplomacy while training and directing the work requirements of officers regarding their accuracy about evidence.
  • This position requires a broad understanding of crime scene and evidence handling as well as CALEA standards for property and evidence.
  • Additionally, the Property and Evidence Technician will be required to learn and work within the departmental Record Management Systems (RMS), and all databases associated with property.


  • Typically requires an Associate's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • The ideal candidate will have a solid working knowledge of the collection, preservation, storage and processing of evidence as well as various Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, and Publisher).
  • Law Enforcement or Police certification in Property and Evidence preferred.
  • The applicant must also be void of any offense and or order that would prohibit the possession of ammunition and or firearms.
  • The candidate must possess an outstanding customer service orientation; excellent written and verbal communication skills; a commitment to accuracy and compliance; and excellent organizational skills.
  • Due to the sensitive nature of access and possession of police equipment, an extensive background check to include but not limited to a criminal history, credit and fingerprint check will be conducted.
