Property Control Specialist

Salary: $20.00 - $25.53 Hourly

Maintain control of the chain of evidence and certain department property. Incumbent must have the ability to give credible testimony in court regarding the chain of evidence. Maintain secured, well-documented evidence and ensure all property is accounted for, disposed of, or returned to its rightful owner. Duties:

  • Receives, catalogs, and stores evidence/property in multiple locations; including found/stolen bicycles.
  • Enters, retrieves, analyzes, and maintains information in the computerized data bases in a timely manner.
  • Prepares and transports evidence for lab analysis.
  • Prepares evidence and facilitates the discovery process in coordination with the District Attorney's Office, the City Attorney's Office and law enforcement personnel.
  • Facilitates and documents the return of evidence/property, after coordination with primary investigator, prosecutors/courts and completion of appropriate background investigations.
  • Disposes of controlled substances and contraband; weapons; and property in a timely manner and in accordance with existing law.
  • Maintains supplies necessary for the packaging and processing of evidence. Oversees equipment maintenance, ensuring calibration to Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and court standards. Performs general housekeeping of secure evidence facilities.
  • Performs evidence intake, process and control for the Corvallis Police Department and the Benton County Sheriff=s Office, in accordance with CALEA, state, and federal laws.
  • Composes reports, including police reports, and correspondence as necessary.
  • Ensures evidence and property room security.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Conforms with all safety rules and performs work is a safe manner.
  • Adheres to all City and Department policies.
  • Delivers excellent customer service to diverse audiences.
  • Maintains effective work relationships.
  • Arrives to work, meetings, and other work-related functions on time and maintains regular job attendance.

Requirements:

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of criminal justice related employment experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to learn local, state, and federal laws regarding the handling and release of evidence.
  • Ability to learn and comply with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) standards regarding evidence.
  • Ability to learn software used for database management.
  • Ability to query, enter and maintain the accuracy of the evidence management software and the ability to navigate the records management software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and to document property status.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion and judgment in dealing with sensitive or confidential information.
  • Ability to relate well to a wide variety of individuals and groups, to get along well with coworkers, and the public, and to maintain effective work relationships.
  • Ability to use a computer and bar coder accurately entering, retrieving, and analyzing data to perform the essential functions of the position.
Special Requirements
  • Ability to obtain LEDS Update/Inquiry level certification by the end of the probationary period.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and a medical examination. Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation, criminal history check and obtain and Oregon State Police Justice Information Systems clearance.
  • Possession or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Oregon Drivers License.
