The City of Gainesville's Police Department currently has an opening for a qualified Computer Forensic Examiner to join our team to perform work as assigned for the Gainesville Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division. This is specialized technical work gathering evidence related to investigations involving computers.

This is specialized technical work conducting thorough analysis of the Criminal Investigations Division. Gainesville Police Department's Criminal Investiagtion Unit conducts numerous investigations that require preservation, extraction, and analysis of data from electronic devices.

Duties:

As a Police Computer Forensic Examiner, a typical work day may include:
  • Conducting thorough and documented preservation, extraction, and analysis of devices in support of Criminal investigations.
  • Manages evidence logs.
  • Assesses crime scenes, both physical and digital, and assists with the execution of search warrants of either.
  • Identifies, collects, inventories, and stores evidence items in a secure manner.
  • Conducts forensic examinations of various media.
  • Documents procedure and findings in official police reports.
  • Collects items of evidence for analysis from affiliates and local agents.
  • Assists with trial preparation.
  • Testifies in criminal or civil matters, in state or federal jurisdiction.
  • Acts as liaison to outside related governmental, educational and non-profit agencies.
  • Assists with school presentations.
  • Assists with traveler operations, specific to on-site camera surveillance and forensics.
  • Assists with human trafficking investigations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Conducts thorough and documented preservation, extraction, and analysis of devices in support of Criminal investigations. Manages evidence logs.
  • Assesses crime scenes, both physical and digital, and assists with the execution of search warrants of either.

  • Conducts forensic examinations of various media.

  • Assists with trial preparation.
  • Testifies in criminal or civil matters, in state or federal jurisdiction.
  • Acts as liaison to outside related governmental, educational and non-profit agencies.
  • Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assists with school presentations.
  • Assists with traveler operations, specific to on-site camera surveillance and forensics.
  • Assists with human trafficking investigations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school degree or equivalent with at least one (1) year experience in computer forensics.
CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES
  • Licenses
    • Must possess a valid Florida Driver License.
  • Certifications
    • IACIS
    • CFCE
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of search warrant language and how to gain authority.
  • Knowledge of how to conduct consent-based searches, and associated authority, scope, and restrictions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in close quarters in undercover environments.
  • Ability to conduct equipment demonstrations and conduct public speaking.
  • Ability to work in small groups.
  • Ability to work with media depicting the sadistic and violent sexual abuse of infants, toddlers, prepubescents, and older children.
  • Skill of on-scene digital device preview and triaging.
  • Skill in on-scene live acquisition of devices running encryption.
  • Skill in social media investigations.
  • Skill in desktop, laptop, and mobile device forensic analysis.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess certain physical abilities and be able to withstand work related environmental conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work may require performance of tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions.
  • May be required to work outside regular business hours.
